Pure and impure food

  • 1. “You are children of the Lord your God. Do not cut yourselves or shave the front of your heads for the dead,
  • 2. For you are a people holy to the Lord your God, whom the Lord has chosen to be his treasured possession out of all the peoples on earth.
  • 3. “Do not eat anything that is forbidden.
  • 4. You may eat the following animals: beef, sheep, goat,
  • 5. deer, gazelle, roe deer, mountain goat, antelope, wild goat and wild sheep.
  • 6. They can eat any animal that has a hoof divided into two claws and that chews the cud.
  • 7. But you may not eat the camel, the rabbit or the mouse, because although they chew the cud, they do not have divided hooves. They are unclean to you.
  • 8. The pig is also unclean, even though it has a divided hoof. You may not eat the meat of these animals or touch their carcasses.
  • 9. “They can eat any creature that lives in the water and has fins and scales.
  • 10. But you must not eat any aquatic creature that does not have fins or scales. It is unclean to you.
  • 11. “You may eat any clean bird.
  • 12. However, they may not eat the eagle, the vulture, or the buzzard,
  • 13. the hawk, any species of crow,
  • 14. the owl, the hawk, any species of falcon,
  • 15. the owl, the snowy owl, the burrowing owl, any species of hawk,
  • 16. the pelican, the Egyptian vulture, the crow,
  • 17. the ibis, the swan, the sea pelican,
  • 18. the sun owl, the Arabian vulture, the sparrow and the bat.
  • 19. “All small winged creatures are unclean for you; you shall not eat them.
  • 20. However, they may eat any winged creature that is clean.
  • 21. “Do not eat anything that has died of itself. You may give it to a foreigner living in any of your towns and he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner. But you are a people holy to the Lord your God. “Do not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.

The tithe

  • 22. “Take a tenth of all that the land produces each year.
  • 23. Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine, and olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the Lord your God at the place he chooses as a dwelling for his Name. So you will learn to fear the Lord your God always.
  • 24. But if the place is too far away and the Lord your God has blessed you abundantly, and you cannot bring your tithe there because the place the Lord has chosen to put his name there is too far away,
  • 25. Exchange your tithes for silver and take the silver to the place the Lord your God will choose.
  • 26. Use the silver to buy whatever you want: cattle or sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything else you want. Eat and rejoice there in the presence of the Lord your God, along with your families.
  • 27. Never forget the Levites who live in your towns, for they have no property or inheritance of their own.
  • 28. Every three years bring all the tithes of that year's produce and store them in your towns.
  • 29. Then the Levites, who have no land or inheritance, and the foreigners, orphans and widows living in their towns, will come and eat until they are satisfied. So the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do.
