A single place of worship

  • 1. “These are the regulations and ordinances you must follow while you live in the land the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has given you as an inheritance.
  • 2. Completely destroy all the places where the nations you are driving out worship their gods, whether on the high mountains or on the hills or under the green trees.
  • 3. Tear down their altars, break their sacred pillars, and burn their Asherah poles. Smash the idols of their gods and erase their names from those places.
  • 4. However, you shall not worship the Lord your God in the same way that they worship their gods.
  • 5. Instead, look for the place the Lord your God will choose out of all the tribes, where he will put his Name and make his dwelling. That is where you must go.
  • 6. Bring your burnt offerings, sacrifices, tithes, special offerings, and everything you have promised the Lord, as well as your freewill offerings and the firstlings of your flocks.
  • 7. There, before the Lord your God, you and your households will eat and rejoice in all that you do, for the Lord your God will bless you.
  • 8. “Don’t act like we are acting here, each one doing what they think is best.
  • 9. For you have not yet come to the resting place and to the inheritance that the Lord your God is giving you.
  • 10. But when you cross the Jordan and settle in the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, he will give you rest from all your enemies around you, and you will live in safety.
  • 11. Then bring everything I command you to the place the Lord your God will choose to put his Name: burnt offerings, sacrifices, tithes, special offerings, and everything you have promised the Lord.
  • 12. Rejoice before the Lord your God, together with your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites who live in your towns, for they have no land or inheritance.
  • 13. Be careful not to abandon the Levites as long as you live in the land.
  • 14. When the Lord your God enlarges your territory as he promised, and you desire to eat meat, then you may eat meat as much as you want.
  • 15. But if the place where the Lord your God chooses to put his Name is far away, you may slaughter animals in any town, according to the blessing the Lord your God gives you. Both the clean and the unclean may eat them, as they would gazelle or deer.
  • 16. However, do not eat the blood; pour it out on the ground like water.
  • 17. You may not eat within your towns the tithe of your grain, new wine, or olive oil, or the firstlings of your herds or flocks, or any of your offerings you have promised, or your freewill offerings or special offerings.
  • 18. Instead, you must eat them in the presence of the Lord your God at the place he will choose—you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites in your towns. Rejoice before the Lord your God in everything you do.
  • 19. Be careful not to abandon the Levites as long as you live in the land.
  • 20. “When the Lord your God enlarges your territory as he promised, and you desire to eat meat, then you may eat meat as much as you want.
  • 21. If the place where the Lord your God chooses to put his Name is far away, you may slaughter animals in any town, according to the blessing the Lord your God gives you. Both the clean and the unclean may eat them, as they would gazelle or deer.
  • 22. However, do not eat the blood; pour it out on the ground like water.
  • 23. You must not eat it, so that it will go well with you and your children, because you will be doing what is right in the eyes of the Lord.
  • 24. Be careful not to offer your burnt offerings wherever you please.
  • 25. Instead, you shall bring them to the place the Lord your God will choose among your tribes, and there you shall offer your burnt offerings, both the meat and the blood, on the altar of the Lord your God. But you may eat the meat.
  • 26. As for the consecrated objects you have and what you have promised, take them to the place the Lord will choose.
  • 27. Offer your burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood, on the altar of the Lord your God. The blood of the offerings must be poured out beside the altar, but you may eat the flesh.
  • 28. Keep all these regulations that I am giving you, and everything will go well with you and your children after you, because you will be doing what is good and right in the eyes of the Lord your God.
  • 29. The Lord your God will drive out the nations before you as you advance. But when you have defeated them and are living in their lands,
  • 30. Be careful not to fall into the trap of imitating the practices of these nations. Do not ask, 'How do these nations serve their gods? We will do the same!'
  • 31. Do not worship the Lord your God in the same way they worship their gods, for they do detestable things that the Lord detests, including sacrificing their sons and daughters in the fire.
  • 32. Be careful to follow all the commands I am giving you; do not add to them or take away from them.
