Order to leave Horeb

  • 1. These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel, on the other side of the Jordan, in the wilderness, in the Arabah, opposite Shuph, between Paran on the one hand, and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Di-Zahab on the other other.
  • 2. It is eleven days' journey from Horeb, by way of the mountainous region of Seir, to Kadesh-Barnea.
  • 3. In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the Israelites, according to all that the Lord had commanded him to say to them.
  • 4. This occurred after Moses defeated Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og, king of Bashan, who lived in Ashteroth, in Edrei.
  • 5. On the other side of the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses began to explain this law, saying:
  • 6. “The Lord our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying, 'You have stayed long enough on this mountain.
  • 7. Turn and go to the hill country of the Amorites, to the places near the Jordan, to the Arabah, to the hill country, to the Negev and to the coast, to the land of the Canaanites and to Lebanon, as far as the great river, the Euphrates.
  • 8. Look! I have placed before you this land. Go and take possession of the land that the Lord swore to give to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and to their descendants after them.'”

Moses appoints assistants

  • 9. At that time I told you: “I cannot take responsibility for you alone.
  • 10. The Lord your God has increased your number so much that today you are as numerous as the stars in the sky.
  • 11. May the Lord, the God of your ancestors, bless you even more and make you prosper, increasing your number even more, so that you may become a great nation.
  • 12. How can I bear the weight of your worries, your problems and your disputes alone?
  • 13. Choose from the tribes men who are wise, experienced and respected by their tribes, and I will make them your leaders.'
  • 14. You answered me: 'The plan you proposed is good.'
  • 15. Then I took the chiefs of their tribes, men of wisdom and experience, and made them chiefs over thousands, over hundreds, over fifties, and over ten, and as rulers over their tribes.
  • 16. And at the same time I commanded your judges: 'Hear the disputes between your brothers and judge with justice, both the issues between one brother and another, and the issues between a foreigner and you.
  • 17. Do not show partiality in judging, listen to both the small and the great. Do not be afraid of anyone, for it is God who judges. And if there is any cause that is too difficult for you, bring it to me, and I will hear it.'
  • 18. At that time I commanded you everything you should do.
  • 19. Then we set out from Horeb and crossed all that great and terrible wilderness that you saw, heading towards the hill country of the Amorites, as the Lord our God had commanded us. Finally we arrived at Kadesh-Barnea.
  • 20. And I said to them, 'You have come to the hill country of the Amorites, which the Lord our God is giving us.
  • 21. Look! The Lord your God has set the land before you. Go up and take possession of it, as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, told you. Don't be afraid or scared.'
  • 22. Then you all came to me and said, 'Let us send some men ahead to explore the land and bring back information about the way we should go and the cities we should reach.'
  • 23. The idea seemed good to me, so I chose twelve men, one from each tribe.
  • 24. They set out and went up into the hill country, reaching the valley of Eshcol, and explored the land.
  • 25. They brought us news and said, 'This is a good land that the Lord our God is giving us.'

Rebellion against the Lord

  • 26. But you refused to go up. They rebelled against the command of the Lord their God.
  • 27. You murmured in your tents and said, 'The Lord hates us; That is why he brought us out of Egypt to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites and destroy us.
  • 28. Where will we go? Our brothers discouraged us, saying: “The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are large, with high walls, up to the sky. Furthermore, we saw there the descendants of the Anakim.”
  • 29. Then I said to them, 'Do not be terrified, nor be afraid of them.
  • 30. The Lord your God, who goes before you, will fight for you, as he did in Egypt, before your eyes,
  • 31. and in the desert. There you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you walked, until you arrived at this place.'
  • 32. Yet you did not trust in the Lord your God,
  • 33. who went before you on the way to find a place for you to pitch camp: by night, in the fire, to show you the way you should go, and by day, in a cloud.
  • 34. When the Lord heard what you said, he became angry and swore:
  • 35. 'None of you from this wicked generation will see the good land that I swore to give to your ancestors,
  • 36. except Caleb, son of Jephunneh. I will give him the land on which he trod, and also to his descendants, because he faithfully followed the Lord.'
  • 37. The Lord was angry with me because of you and said, 'You shall not go in there either.
  • 38. Joshua son of Nun, your helper, will go in there. Encourage him, for he will divide the land among the Israelites.
  • 39. And the children, whom you said would become spoil, and your children, who today know neither good nor evil, they will enter the land. I will give it to them, and they will possess it.
  • 40. As for you, turn and go into the wilderness, along the path that leads to the Red Sea.'
  • 41. Then you answered, 'We have sinned against the Lord. We will now go and fight, as the Lord our God has commanded us.' You grabbed whatever weapons were at hand and carelessly advanced into the mountainous region.
  • 42. The Lord said to me, 'Tell them: Do not go up or fight, for I am not among you. You will be defeated by your enemies.'
  • 43. I spoke to you, but you would not listen to me. They disobeyed the command of the Lord and, arrogant, went up into the mountainous region.
  • 44. Then the Amorites who lived there came out and confronted them, chasing them like bees and defeating them from Seir to Hormah.
  • 45. When you returned and wept before the Lord, he neither answered you nor paid attention to you.
  • 46. That's why you stayed in Kadesh for as long as you stayed there.
