David reigns over Israel

  • 1. Representatives from all the tribes of Israel came to David in Hebron and said, “We are of the same lineage as you, O king.
  • 2. Even when Saul was our king, you were the one who led Israel in battle. The Lord has revealed to you: 'You will be the shepherd of Israel, my people, and you will rule over them' “.
  • 3. Then all the authorities of Israel went to meet King David in Hebron. There, before the Lord, they made a covenant with David and anointed him king of Israel.
  • 4. David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned for forty years.
  • 5. For seven and a half years he ruled Judah in Hebron, and in Jerusalem he ruled over all Israel and Judah for thirty-three years.

David conquers Jerusalem

  • 6. King David and his soldiers marched to Jerusalem to fight the Jebusites who lived there. The Jebusites said to David, “You won’t be able to get in here! Even the blind and crippled can defeat us.” They believed that David would not be able to enter.
  • 7. However, David conquered the fortress of Zion and transformed it into the City of David.
  • 8. On that day, David said: “Whoever wants to defeat the Jebusites will have to pass through the water pass and attack the blind and crippled, enemies of David.” And that is why it is said: “The 'blind and lame' shall not enter the palace.”
  • 9. David settled in the fortress and called it the City of David. He also built fortifications all around, from Milo.
  • 10. And David became more and more powerful, for the Lord, the God of hosts, was with him.
  • 11. Shortly afterwards, Hiram, the king of Tire, sent messengers to David, bringing him cedar wood, as well as carpenters and masons, who built a palace for David.
  • 12. Then David realized that the Lord had established him as king of Israel and that his kingdom was flourishing because of his people Israel.
  • 13. After moving from Hebron to Jerusalem, David took more concubines and wives and had more sons and daughters.
  • 14. These are the names of his sons who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,
  • 15. Ibar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia,
  • 16. Elisama, Eliada and Eliphelete.

David defeats the Philistines

  • 17. As soon as the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king of Israel, they came with their entire army to capture him. However, David heard about this and went to the fortress.
  • 18. The Philistines spread throughout the Valley of Rephaim.
  • 19. David then inquired of the Lord, saying, “Should I attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?” The Lord replied, “Go, for I will hand over the Philistines to you.”
  • 20. David went to Baal-perazim and defeated the Philistines there. He said, “Just as the waters of a flood cause destruction, so the Lord has destroyed my enemies before me.” And that's why the place came to be called Baal-Perazim.
  • 21. The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David and his soldiers took them.
  • 22. Once again, the Philistines invaded the Valley of Rephaim.
  • 23 Then David inquired of the Lord again, and the Lord replied, “Do not attack directly; go around behind them and attack them in front of the mulberry trees.
  • 24. When you hear the sound of footsteps in the tops of the mulberry trees, move quickly, for this will be a sign that the Lord is going out ahead of you to defeat the Philistine army.”
  • 25. David did as the Lord commanded and defeated the Philistines from Gibeon to Gezer.
