  • 2. One afternoon, David got up from bed and walked across the terrace of the palace. From the terrace, he saw a very beautiful woman taking a bath.
  • 3. David sent someone to find out who she was. They told him that she was Bathsheba, daughter of Eliam and wife of Uriah the Hittite.
  • 4. David ordered her to be brought and slept with her, because she had purified herself from her menstruation. Afterwards, she returned to her home.
  • 5. The woman became pregnant and sent a message to David, informing him of the pregnancy.
  • 6. David then sent a message to Joab: “Bring me Uriah the Hittite.” Joab complied with the request and sent Uriah to David.
  • 7. When Uriah arrived, David asked him how Joab and the soldiers were doing, and how the war was progressing.
  • 8. After this, David said to Uriah, “Go and rest at home.” Uriah left the palace, but instead of going home, he lay down at the entrance to the palace with his master's servants.
  • 9. When they told David that Uriah had not gone home, he asked, “Haven’t you just come back from a long journey? Why didn’t you go home?”
  • 10. Uriah replied, “The Ark of the Covenant, the men of Israel and Judah are living in tents; my lord Joab and the soldiers are camped in the open air. How could I go home, eat, drink and lie with my wife? I swear on your name and your life that I would never do such a thing!”
  • 11. Then David said to him, “Stay here today, and tomorrow I will send you back.” Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day, but the next day
  • 12. David invited him to eat and drink, and made him drunk. In the afternoon, however, Uriah went out to sleep on his mat with his master's servants, and did not go home.
  • 13. The next morning David wrote a letter to Joab and gave it to Uriah for him to take.
  • 14. In the letter, David wrote: “Place Uriah in the front line, where the battle is fiercest, and then retreat, so that he will be wounded and die.”
  • 15. When Joab surrounded the city, he positioned Uriah where he knew the enemies were strongest.
  • 16. The men of the city went out and fought against Joab, and some of David's officers were killed. Uriah the Hittite was also killed.
  • 17. Joab sent a full report of the battle to David,
  • 18. with a message to the messenger: “When you finish telling the king everything that happened,
  • 19. He may be indignant and ask, 'Why did you come so close to the city to fight? Didn't you know they would shoot arrows from the top of the walls?
  • 20. Who killed Abimelech, son of Jerubsheth, at Thebesh? Wasn't it a woman who threw a millstone from the top of the wall, and he died? Why did you come so close to the wall?' If he asks you this, tell him, 'Your servant Uriah the Hittite has also died.'
  • 21. The messenger departed, and when he arrived, he reported to David everything that Joab had said,
  • 22. including: “The enemies surrounded us and pursued us in the open field, but we pushed them back to the entrance of the city.
  • 23. Then the archers shot arrows from the top of the walls at your servants, killing some of them. Uriah the Hittite was also killed.”
  • 24. David sent a message to the messenger, saying: “Do not worry about this, for the sword devours both. Increase the attack on the city and destroy it.” He further encouraged the messenger to encourage Joab.
  • 25. When Uriah's wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him.
  • 26. After the mourning was over, David ordered her to be brought to the palace, and she became his wife and gave birth to a son. But what David did displeased the Lord.
  • 27. The Lord sent the prophet Nathan to David to confront him with his sin. Nathan told David a story about a rich man and a poor man in order to show him his guilt.
