Amaziah is king of Judah

  • 1. In the second year of the reign of Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz as king of Israel, Amaziah the son of Joash began to reign as king of Judah.
  • 2. He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem for twenty-nine years. His mother's name was Jehoadan; she was from Jerusalem.
  • 3. Amaziah did what was pleasing in the eyes of the Lord, but not like David, his predecessor. He followed the example of his father Joash in all things.
  • 4. However, the idolatrous altars were not removed; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense in them.
  • 5. As soon as Amaziah secured his dominance over the kingdom, he ordered the execution of the murderers of his father, the king.
  • 6. However, he did not kill the children of the murderers, as is written in the Law of Moses, where the Lord commanded: “Fathers shall not be killed for their children's sake, nor children for their parents' sake; everyone will die for their own sin.”
  • 7. Amaziah was responsible for defeating ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt and conquered the city of Shelah in battle, giving it the name Jocteel, a name that is still used today.
  • 8. Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, son of Jehoahaz and grandson of Jehu, king of Israel, challenging him: “Come and face me in battle.”
  • 18. But Jehoash answered Amaziah, “The thornbush of Lebanon sent a message to the cedar of Lebanon: 'Give your daughter in marriage to my son.' But a wild animal from Lebanon passed by and trampled the thorn bush.
  • 10. Surely you defeated the Edomites and are now proud. Stay at your home! Why provoke a disaster that will ultimately drag both you and Judah into ruin?”
  • 11. Amaziah, however, did not listen to the advice of Jehoash, king of Israel, and they attacked each other in Beth Shemesh, in Judah.
  • 12. Judah was defeated by Israel, and its soldiers fled to their homes.
  • 13. Jehoash captured Amaziah, son of Joash and grandson of Ahaziah, in Beth Shemesh. Then Jehoash went to Jerusalem and tore down one hundred and eighty meters of the city wall, from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate.
  • 14. Then he took all the gold and silver and all the utensils found in the temple of the Lord and in the treasury of the royal palace. Furthermore, he took hostages and returned to Samaria.
  • 15. The other events of Jehoash's reign, his actions and all his conquests, including his war against Amaziah, king of Judah, are recorded in the annals of the kings of Israel.
  • 16. Jehoash rested with his ancestors and was buried with the kings of Israel in Samaria. His son Jeroboam was his successor on the throne.
  • 17. Amaziah son of Joash, king of Judah, lived fifteen years longer after the death of Jehoash, son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel.
  • 18. The other events of Amaziah's reign are recorded in the annals of the kings of Judah.
  • 19. A conspiracy was hatched against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish. However, they pursued him there and killed him.
  • 20. His body was brought back on a horse and buried in Jerusalem, next to his ancestors, in the City of David.
  • 21. Then all the people of Judah made sixteen-year-old Azariah king in the place of his father Amaziah.
  • 22. Azariah rebuilt the city of Elath and returned it to Judah, after Amaziah rested with his ancestors.

Jeroboam II is king of Israel

  • 23. In the fifteenth year of the reign of Amaziah the son of Joash as king of Judah, Jeroboam the son of Jehoash began to reign in Samaria as king of Israel, and he reigned forty-one years.
  • 24. He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and did not turn away from any of the sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat caused Israel to commit.
  • 25. He was responsible for reestablishing the borders of Israel, from Lebo-hamath to the Sea of Arabah, according to the word of the Lord, the God of Israel, which he had spoken through his servant Jonah, son of Amittai, the prophet of Gath-Hepher.
  • 26. For the Lord saw the misery of Israel, that it was bitter for all, both slave and free, and there was no one to help Israel.
  • 27. But the Lord had not decided to erase the name of Israel from under heaven. Therefore he delivered them by the hand of Jeroboam son of Jehoash.
  • 28. The rest of the events of Jeroboam's reign, all his actions and all his conquests, including how he recovered Damascus and Hamath for Israel, which had belonged to Judah, are recorded in the annals of the kings of Israel.
  • 29. Jeroboam rested with his ancestors, the kings of Israel. His son Zechariah was his successor on the throne.
