  • 1. When the festival came to an end, the Israelites went out into the cities of Judah and destroyed the sacred stones, tore down the sacred poles, and destroyed the idolatrous altars throughout Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh. After eliminating everything, they returned to their cities and properties.

Contributions to the cult

  • 2. Hezekiah appointed the priests and Levites to their due duties, to present burnt offerings and communion sacrifices, to minister, to offer thanksgiving, and to sing praises at the gates of the house of the Lord.
  • 3. The king also contributed from his own resources for the morning and evening burnt offerings, as well as for the burnt offerings on the Sabbath, new moons, and fixed festivals, according to what is written in the Law of the Lord.
  • 4. He commanded the people of Jerusalem to give the priests and Levites the portion due to them, so that they could devote themselves to the Law of the Lord.
  • 5. As soon as the order was announced, the Israelites generously brought the firstfruits of wheat, wine, oil, honey and all the produce of the fields. They brought the tithe of everything in large quantities.
  • 6. Both the Israelites and the inhabitants of Judah who lived in the cities of Judah brought tithes of the flocks and sacred animals dedicated to the Lord, and piled them into heaps.
  • 7. They began to heap up the offerings in the third month and finished in the seventh month.
  • 8. When Hezekiah and his officials saw the piles of offerings, they praised the Lord and blessed his people, Israel.
  • 9. Hezekiah asked the priests and Levites about those offerings.
  • 10. The high priest Azariah, of the lineage of Zadok, answered, “Since the people began to bring their offerings to the temple of the Lord, we have had enough food and there is still plenty left over, for the Lord has blessed his people, and this is the abundance that remained.”
  • 11. Hezekiah ordered chambers to be prepared in the temple of the Lord, and this was done.
  • 12. Then they faithfully collected the offerings, the tithes and the consecrated things. The Levite Conaniah was charged with this task, and his brother Shimei was his assistant.
  • 13. Jeiel, Azaziah, Nahath, Asahel, Jeremoth, Jozabad, Eliel, Ismaquias, Maath and Benaiah were appointed as supervisors, subordinate to Conaniah and his brother Shimei. They were appointed by King Hezekiah and Azariah, the official in charge of the house of God.
  • 14. Korah, son of the Levite Imna, guardian of the eastern gate, was responsible for the voluntary offerings dedicated to God. He distributed the offerings dedicated to the Lord and the most holy offerings.
  • 15. Under his command were Eden, Miniamim, Jeshua, Shemaiah, Amariah and Shecaniah, who faithfully distributed the offerings to their brothers, both older and younger, in their respective priestly cities.
  • 16. They distributed the portions to men registered by genealogy from twenty years old and upward, to all who entered the temple of the Lord to fulfill their daily obligations, according to their duties and shifts.
  • 17. The genealogical records of the priests were kept according to their families, while the Levites over the age of twenty were recorded according to their responsibilities and shifts.
  • 18. The record included all the children, women, sons and daughters of the entire group, as the priests and Levites remained faithful in consecrating themselves.
  • 19. From among the priests descended from Aaron, who lived in the lands around their cities, some men were appointed to distribute the portions to all the priests and to all who were registered by genealogy among the Levites.
  • 20. This was done throughout the kingdom of Judah, and Hezekiah did what was good and just and faithful before the Lord his God.
  • 21. In all the works he undertook in the service of God's temple and in obedience to the law and commandments, Hezekiah sought his God with all his heart, and prospered.
