  • 1. When Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, returned safely to his palace in Jerusalem,
  • 2. The seer Jehu, son of Hanani, came out to meet him and said to him: “Should you help the wicked and love those who hate the Lord? Because of this, the wrath of the Lord is upon you.
  • 3. Yet there is good in you, for you have rid the land of idols and sought God with all your heart.”
  • 4. Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem and returned to the nation, from Beersheba to the mountains of Ephraim, bringing the people back to the Lord, the God of their ancestors.
  • 5. He appointed judges in all the fortified cities of Judah,
  • 6. saying to them: “Be careful what you are doing, for you are not judging in the name of men, but of the Lord, who is with you when you pronounce sentence.

Jehoshaphat Appoints Judges

  • 7. Now may the fear of the Lord be upon you. Be careful what you do, for the Lord our God does not tolerate injustice, partiality or bribery.”
  • 8. In Jerusalem, Jehoshaphat also appointed some Levites, priests and heads of Israelite families to judge matters of the Lord's law and resolve disputes between the residents.
  • 9. And he gave them the following instructions: “Serve faithfully and with an upright heart in the fear of the Lord.
  • 10. In every case brought before you by your brothers who live in the cities, whether concerning the shedding of blood, or concerning the law, commandments, statutes or ordinances, warn them not to sin against the Lord, otherwise the wrath of the Lord will come upon you and upon them. Do this and you will not be guilty.
  • 11. Amariah, the high priest, will be at your disposal in matters relating to the Lord, and Zebadiah, son of Ishmael, leader of the tribe of Judah, will be with you in civil matters. The Levites will act as officers before you. Be courageous in carrying out your duties, and may the Lord be with those who act correctly.”
