Asa's final years

  • 1. In the thirty-sixth year of the reign of Asa, Baasha king of Israel invaded Judah and fortified Ramah, so that no one could enter or leave the territory of Asa king of Judah.
  • 2. Then Asa gathered silver and gold from the treasury of the temple of the Lord and from his own palace, and sent it to Benhadad king of Syria, who reigned in Damascus, with a message that said:
  • 3. “Let's make a treaty, like my father and yours did. I am sending you silver and gold. Now break the treaty you have with Baasha, king of Israel, so that he can leave my land.”
  • 4. Ben-Hadad agreed to King Asa's proposal and ordered the commanders of his troops to attack the cities of Israel. They conquered Ijom, Dan, Abel-maim and all the store cities of Naphtali.
  • 5. When Baasha heard this, he stopped building the walls of Ramah.
  • 6. Then King Asa called together all the men of Judah, and they removed the stones and wood that Baasha had used in Ramah. With this material, Asa fortified Geba and Mizpah.
  • 7. At that time the seer Hanani went to Asa, king of Judah, and said: “Because you trusted in the king of Syria instead of trusting in the Lord your God, the army of the king of Syria escaped out of your hands.
  • 8. Were not the Ethiopians and the Libyans a great army, with chariots and horsemen in great numbers? However, when you turned to the Lord and asked him for help, he gave them into your hands.
  • 9. For the eyes of the Lord are watchful throughout the earth to strengthen those who are completely devoted to him. In this, you committed a great folly. From now on, you will have to face wars.”
  • 10. Asa was angry with the seer because of these words; He was so outraged that he had him arrested. At this time, Asa also brutally oppressed some of the people.
  • 11. The other events of Asa's reign, from beginning to end, are recorded in the historical books of the kings of Judah and Israel.
  • 12. In the thirty-ninth year of his reign, Asa became sick in his feet. Although his illness was serious, he did not seek help from the Lord, but only from doctors.
  • 13. In the forty-first year of his reign, Asa died and rested with his ancestors.
  • 14. He was buried in the tomb that he himself had dug for himself in the City of David. They laid him on a bed covered in spices and various aromatic essences, and lit a large fire in his honor.
