Asa's awakening

  • 1. The Spirit of God came upon Azariah, son of Oded.
  • 2. He went out to meet Asa and said, “Listen to me, Asa and all the people of Judah and Benjamin! The Lord is with you when you are with him. If you seek him, you will find him, but if you abandon him, he will abandon you.
  • 3. For a long time Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach them and without the law.
  • 4. But in their distress they turned to the Lord, the God of Israel, and sought him, and he allowed them to find him.
  • 5. In those days it was not safe to travel, for there were many disturbances and troubles in all the lands.
  • 6. Nation rose against nation and city against city, for God had brought them great trouble.
  • 7. But be strong and do not lose heart, for your work will be rewarded.”
  • 8. As soon as Asa heard the words and prophecy of the prophet Azariah, son of Oded, he was filled with courage. He removed the abominable idols from all the land of Judah and Benjamin, as well as from the cities he had conquered in the mountains of Ephraim, and restored the altar of the Lord in front of the porch of the temple of the Lord.
  • 9. He also gathered together all the people of Judah and Benjamin, and called together those who lived among them, from the tribes of Ephraim, Manasseh and Simeon, for many of the Israelites joined him when they saw that the Lord their God was with him.
  • 10. They gathered together in Jerusalem in the third month of the fifteenth year of Asa's reign.
  • 11. That day they offered to the Lord seven hundred oxen and seven thousand sheep and goats, from the spoil they had brought.
  • 12They made a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their ancestors, with all their heart and with all their soul.
  • 13. Anyone who did not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, would be killed, whether they were small or great, male or female.
  • 14. They swore to the Lord with a loud voice, with the sound of trumpets and trumpets.
  • 15. The people of Judah rejoiced at the oath, for they swore it with all their heart. They sought the Lord with a sincere desire, and he allowed himself to be found by them and granted them peace on all borders.
  • 16. King Asa even deposed his grandmother Maacah from her position as queen mother for making a disgusting idol image. Asa knocked it down, tore it into pieces, and burned it in the Kidron Valley.
  • 17. Although the idolatrous altars were not removed from Israel, Asa's heart was completely devoted to the Lord throughout his life.
  • 18. He brought to the temple of God the silver, gold, and utensils that he and his father had consecrated.
  • 19. And there was no more war until the thirty-fifth year of his reign.
