Asa is king of Judah

  • 1. Asa rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David. His son, Asa, succeeded him as king, and during the first ten years of his reign the country enjoyed peace.
  • 2. Asa did what the Lord his God approved.
  • 3. He removed the altars of foreign gods and the idolatrous altars from the mountains. He tore down the sacred columns and destroyed the sacred posts.
  • 4. Asa commanded the people of Judah to seek the Lord, the God of their ancestors, and to obey his laws and commandments.
  • 5. He removed the idolatrous altars and the altars of incense from all the cities of Judah, and the kingdom enjoyed peace during his reign.
  • 6. During this period of peace, Asa built fortified cities in Judah. No enemy rose up against him during these years, for the Lord gave him rest.
  • 7. Asa said to the people of Judah, “Let us build these cities with walls all around, fortified with towers and gates and bars. The land is still ours, because we seek the Lord our God; we sought him, and he gave us peace on every border.” So they built and prospered.
  • 8. Asa had an army of three hundred thousand men from Judah, all equipped with large shields and spears. In addition, he had two hundred and eighty thousand men of Benjamin, armed with small shields and bows. They were all valiant warriors.
  • 9. The Ethiopian Zerah marched against them with an army of a million soldiers and three hundred chariots, and arrived at Maressa.
  • 10. Asa went out to meet him and positioned his troops in the valley of Zefatá, near Maressa.
  • 11. Then Asa cried out to the Lord his God, “O Lord, there is none other than you to help the weak against the mighty. Help us, O Lord our God, for in you we trust and in your name we come against this great army. O Lord, you are our God, do not allow man to prevail against you.”
  • 12. The Lord defeated the Ethiopians before Asa and Judah. The Ethiopians fled,
  • 13. and Asa and his army pursued them as far as Gerar. Many of the Ethiopians were killed; they were unable to recover, for they were defeated before the Lord and the army of Judah. And the people of Judah plundered much spoil.
  • 14. They destroyed all the cities around Gerar, for the terror of the Lord had fallen on them. They plundered all these cities, for there was much spoil in them.
  • 15. They also attacked the camps where there were livestock and captured a large number of sheep, goats and camels. After that they returned to Jerusalem.
