Solomon asks for wisdom

  • 2. Solomon spoke to all Israel: the leaders of thousands and hundreds, the judges, all the leaders of Israel and the heads of families.
  • 3. Then the king went with the whole assembly to the holy place, at the top of Gibeon, for there was the Tent of Meeting that Moses, the servant of the Lord, had made in the desert.
  • 4. David had transported the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim to the tent he had pitched for it in Jerusalem.
  • 5. The bronze altar that Bezalel, the son of Uri and grandson of Hur, had made was in Gibeon, in front of the tabernacle of the Lord; There Solomon and the assembly consulted the Lord.
  • 6. Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings to the Lord on the bronze altar in the Tent of Meeting.
  • 7. That night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, “Ask me for whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”
  • 8. Solomon replied, “You were very kind to my father David and made me king in his place.
  • 9. Now, Lord God, may your promise to my father David be confirmed, for you have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth.
  • 10. Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this nation, for who can rule this great people of yours?”
  • 11. God said to Solomon, “Since this is the desire of your heart and you have not asked for riches, nor possessions, nor honor, nor the death of your enemies, nor long life, but wisdom and knowledge to rule over my people, over whom I made him king,
  • 12. you will receive what you asked for, but I will also give you riches, possessions and honor, such as no king before you had and no one after you will have.”
  • 13. Then Solomon returned from Gibeon, from before the Tent of Meeting, to Jerusalem, and reigned over Israel.
  • 14. Solomon gathered chariots and horses; He had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses, some of which he kept in the garrisons of some cities and the other close to him, in Jerusalem.
  • 15. The king made silver and gold as common in Jerusalem as stones, and the cedar as numerous as the wild fig trees of the Shephelah.
  • 16. Solomon's horses were imported from Egypt and Cilicia, where the king's suppliers bought them.
  • 17. They imported from Egypt a chariot for seven pounds and two hundred grams of silver, and a horse for one pound and eight hundred grams, and exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and the Arameans.
