Saul looks for Samuel

  • 1. There was a man from Benjamin named Kish, a rich and influential man. He was the son of Abiel, grandson of Zeror, great-grandson of Becorat, and great-great-grandson of Aphia.
  • 2. Kish had a son named Saul, a young man of impressive appearance and unique among the Israelites. He stood out for his height, being taller than everyone else.
  • 3. One day, the donkeys of Kish, Saul's father, disappeared. Then he said to Saul, “Call one of the servants and go look for the donkeys.”
  • 4. They crossed the mountains of Ephraim and the region of Salisa, but they did not find the donkeys. They continued searching and entered the district of Saalim, but the donkeys were still not there. Even crossing Benjamin's territory, they were unable to find them.
  • 5. When they reached the district of Zuph, Saul said to his servant, “Let us go back, for if we delay any longer, my father will stop worrying about the donkeys and start worrying about us.”
  • 6. However, the servant replied: “In this city there lives a highly respected man of God. Everything he says happens. Let’s talk to him, maybe he can show us the way.”
  • 7. Saul said to his servant, “But what can we offer him? We ran out of food in our bags. We have nothing to give to the man of God. What can we do?"
  • 8. The servant replied, “I have three grams of silver. I will give this to the man of God, and he will show us the way to follow.”
  • 9. (In the past, when someone wanted to consult God, they used to say, “Let's go to the seer,” because today's prophet was called a seer.)
  • 10. Saul agreed with the idea and said, “Let’s go!” They went to the city where the man of God was.
  • 11. When they climbed the hill to get to the city, they met some young women who were going out to get water. They asked the girls: “Is the seer in town?”
  • 12. The girls replied, “Yes, he is over there. Hurry up! He arrived in our city today because the people are going to offer a sacrifice on the altar on the mountain.”
  • 13. They said to Saul and his servant, “As soon as you enter the city, you will meet the seer before he goes up to the mountain altar to eat. The people will not start eating before he arrives, as he is the one who must bless the sacrifice. After that, guests will be able to eat. So go up now and you will find him quickly.”
  • 14. Saul and his servant went into the city, and as they entered, Samuel came towards them, on his way to the altar on the mountain.
  • 15. The day before Saul arrived, the Lord had revealed this to Samuel:
  • 16. “Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man from the tribe of Benjamin. Anoint him as leader over my people, Israel. He will deliver my people from the hands of the Philistines. I heard the cry of my people and heeded their request.”
  • 17. When Samuel saw Saul, the Lord said to him, “This is the man I told you about. He will rule my people.”
  • 18. Saul approached Samuel at the entrance to the city and asked, “Please, can you tell me where the seer’s house is?”
  • 19. Samuel replied, “I am the seer. Go ahead of me to the altar, because today you will eat with me. Tomorrow morning, I will answer all your questions and then you can go on your way.”
  • 20. As for the donkeys you lost three days ago, don't worry about them anymore. They have already been found. And to whom will all that is precious in Israel belong, if not to you and your family?”
  • 21. Saul replied, “But I am a Benjamite, from the smallest of the tribes of Israel, and my clan is the smallest of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin. Why are you telling me all this?”
  • 22. Samuel took Saul and his servant to the hall of honor and placed them at the table, along with about thirty guests.
  • 23. Samuel said to the cook, “Bring me the portion of meat I gave you and asked you to keep.”
  • 24. The cook brought the leg of the animal and what was on it and placed it before Saul. Samuel said, “Here is what has been reserved for you. Eat, for it was set aside for this occasion from the moment I said: I have guests.” And Saul ate with Samuel that day.
  • 25. After they went down from the mountain to the city, Samuel talked to Saul on the roof of his house.
  • 26. The next morning, at daybreak, Samuel called Saul to the roof and said, “Get up, and I will accompany you for a distance. Then you will continue your journey.” Saul got up and left with Samuel.
  • 27. As they were going down from the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Ask your servant to go ahead.” The servant went, and Samuel continued, “Stay here for a moment, for I have a message from God for you.”
