Saul saves the city of Jabesh

  • 1. Nahash the Ammonite marched against Jabesh-gilead and besieged it. The men of Jabesh said to him, “We will make a treaty with you and submit to you.”
  • 2. But Nahash the Ammonite replied, “I will make a deal with you only if I gouge out each of your right eyes and humiliate all Israel.”
  • 3. The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days to send messengers throughout Israel. If no one comes to help us, we will surrender.”
  • 4. When the messengers arrived at Gibeah, Saul's hometown, and reported what had happened, all the people wept aloud.
  • 5. At that time Saul was tending his cattle in the field and asked, “What is happening to the people? Why are they weeping?” Then he was told what the men of Jabesh had said.
  • 6. When Saul heard this, the Spirit of God came upon him, and he was furious.
  • 7. He took two oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent the pieces by messengers throughout Israel, proclaiming, “This is what will happen to the livestock of those who do not follow Saul and Samuel.” Then the fear of the Lord fell on the people, and they all came together.
  • 8. When Saul assembled them at Bezek, there were three hundred thousand men from Israel and thirty thousand from Judah.
  • 9. He said to the messengers of Jabesh, “Tell the men of Jabesh-gilead, ‘Tomorrow at noon there will be deliverance for you.’” When the people of Jabesh heard this, they were filled with joy.
  • 10. Then the men of Jabesh said to the Ammonites, “Tomorrow we will surrender ourselves to you, and you can do whatever you want with us.”
  • 11. The next day Saul divided his men into three groups; they entered the Ammonite camp before dawn and fought until noon. Those who survived were scattered so that no two of them were together.

Saul confirmed as king

  • 12. Then the people said to Samuel, “Who would have doubted that Saul would be our king? Bring these men to us, and we will kill them.”
  • 13. But Saul replied, “No one will be put to death today, because the Lord has brought salvation to Israel this day.”
  • 14. Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and establish the kingdom there.”
  • 15. So all the people went to Gilgal and proclaimed Saul king in the presence of the Lord. There they offered fellowship offerings to the Lord, and Saul and all the Israelites rejoiced greatly.
