The people of Jerusalem

  • 1. All Israelites were listed in the genealogies of the historical records of the kings of Israel. For their unfaithfulness, the people of Judah were taken prisoner to Babylon.
  • 2. The first to return to their properties and cities were some of the people and some priests, Levites and temple servants.
  • 3. Those from Judah, Benjamin and Ephraim and Manasseh who settled in Jerusalem were:
  • 4. Utai, son of Ammihud, grandson of Omri, great-grandson of Inri, and great-great-grandson of Bani, a descendant of Perez, son of Judah.
  • 5. Of the descendants of Shelah: The firstborn Asaiah with his sons.
  • 6. Of the descendants of Zerah: Jeuel. Those of Judah were 690.
  • 7. Of the Benjamites: Salu, son of Meshullam, grandson of Hodaviah and great-grandson of Hassenua;
  • 8. Ibniah, son of Jeroham; Elah, son of Uzzi, son of Michri; and Meshullam, son of Shephatiah, son of Reuel, son of Ibniah.
  • 9. Of the tribe of Benjamin, listed in their genealogy, were 956. All these men were heads of their families.
  • 10. Of the priests: Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, Jachin;
  • 11. Azariah, son of Hilkiah, grandson of Meshullam, great-grandson of Zadok, great-grandson of Meraioth and great-great-grandson of Ahitub, the leader in charge of the temple of God;
  • 12. Adaiah, son of Jeroham, grandson of Pashhur and great-grandson of Malchiah; and Masai, son of Adiel, grandson of Jazerah, great-grandson of Meshullam, great-great-grandson of Mesilemith, and great-great-grandson of Immer.
  • 13. The number of priests who were heads of families was 1,760. They were capable men, and their responsibility was to minister in the temple of God.
  • 14. Of the Levites: Shemaiah, son of Hasshub, grandson of Azricam and great-grandson of Hashabiah, a Merarite;
  • 15. Baquebachar, Heres, Galal and Mattaniah, son of Micah, grandson of Zichri and great-grandson of Asaph;
  • 16. Obadiah, son of Shemaiah, grandson of Galal and great-grandson of Jeduthun; and Berekiah, son of Asa and grandson of Elkanah, who lived in the villages of the Netophathites.
  • 17. The guards of the gates were: Shallum the chief, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman and their brothers, who are to this day
  • 18. the guards of the King's gate in the east. Salum was the boss. These were the guards at the gates, who belonged to the camp of the Levites.
  • 19. Shallum, son of Korah, grandson of Ebiasaph and great-grandson of Korah, and his relatives, the Korahites, guards of the gates, responsible for guarding the entrances to the Tent, as their ancestors had been responsible for guarding the entrance to the dwelling of the Lord.
  • 20. At that time Phinehas son of Eleazar was in charge of guarding the gates, and the Lord was with him.
  • 21. Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was the guard at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
  • 22. The total number of those chosen to be gate guards, recorded in the genealogies of their villages, was 212. They had been appointed to these positions of trust by David and the seer Samuel.
  • 23. They and their descendants were charged with guarding the doors of the temple of the Lord, the temple called the Tent.
  • 24. The guards guarded the gates on the four sides: north, south, east and west.
  • 25. Their relatives, residing in their villages, had to come from time to time and work with them for periods of seven days.
  • 26. But the four main gatekeepers, who were Levites, were given the responsibility of taking care of the rooms and treasury of the temple of God.
  • 27. They spent the night near the temple of God, as they had the duty to watch it and open the doors every morning.
  • 28. Some Levites were in charge of the utensils used in worship in the temple; they counted them when they were taken out and when they were returned.
  • 29. Others were responsible for the furniture and all other utensils of the sanctuary, as well as the flour, wine, oil, incense and spices.
  • 30. And still others took care of handling the spices.
  • 31. A Levite named Mattithiah, the eldest son of the Koreite Shallum, was responsible for baking the bread for the offerings.
  • 32. And among the Kohathites, his brothers, some were in charge of preparing the bread that was placed on the table every Sabbath.
  • 33. The singers, heads of Levite families, remained in the temple rooms and were exempt from other duties, as they dedicated themselves day and night to their own task.
  • 34. These were all heads of Levite families, listed as leaders in their genealogies, and lived in Jerusalem.

Saul's genealogy

  • 35. Jeiel, the father of Gibeon, lived in Gibeon. His wife's name was Maacah;
  • 36. and that of his eldest son, Abdom.
  • 37. Then were born Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab,
  • 38. Gedor, Aiô, Zacharias and Myclote.
  • 39. Ner begot Kish, Kish begat Saul, Saul begat Jonathan, Malchishua, Abinadab and Eshbaal.
  • 40. This was the son of Jonathan: Merib-Baal, who fathered Micah.
  • 41. These were the sons of Micah: Pithom, Melech, Tareiah and Ahaz.
  • 42. Ahaz begat Jadah; Jadah begat Alemeth, Azmaveth and Zimri; and Zimri begat Mosa.
  • 43. Mosa begat Bineah, whose son was Rephaiah; his son was Eleasa, father of Azel.
  • 44. Azel had six sons, and their names were: Azricam, Bocru, Ishmael, Shearias, Obadiah and Hanan. These were Azel's children.
