David's victories

  • 1. After these events, David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, and took the city of Gath and its villages from their hands.
  • 2. He also defeated the Moabites, who became his vassals, paying him tribute.
  • 3. Furthermore, David defeated Hadadezer, king of Zobah, near Hamath, while Hadadezer was trying to extend his rule to the Euphrates River.
  • 4. David captured from him a thousand chariots, seven thousand horsemen and twenty thousand foot soldiers. He also cut the sinews of all the chariot horses, leaving only a hundred of them.
  • 5. When the Arameans from Damascus came to Hadadezer's aid, David killed twenty-two thousand of them.
  • 6. Then he established military garrisons in the kingdom of the Arameans of Damascus, and they became his tributaries. The Lord granted victories to David everywhere he went.
  • 7. David also took the golden shields that were used by Hadadezer's officers and took them to Jerusalem.
  • 8. Furthermore, from Tibat and Cum, cities that belonged to Hadadezer, David took a large quantity of bronze, which Solomon would later use to make the Bronze Sea, the columns and various utensils.
  • 9. When Tohu king of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer king of Zobah,
  • 10. sent his son Hadoram to greet and congratulate King David on his victory over Hadadezer, who had fought against Tohu. Hadoram brought with him objects of silver, gold and bronze.
  • 11. David dedicated these objects to the Lord, just as he had done with the silver and gold that he had taken from all the nations: from the Edomites, the Moabites, the Ammonites, the Philistines and the Amalekites.
  • 12. Abishai son of Zeruiah defeated eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.
  • 13. He placed military garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became David's subjects. The Lord granted victories to David everywhere he went.

David's officers

  • 14. David reigned over all Israel, administering justice and equity to all his people.
  • 15. Joab son of Zeruiah was commander of the army; Jehoshaphat, son of Ailude, was the royal chronicler;
  • 16. Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were priests; Sasá was the scribe;
  • 17. Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, commanded the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and King David's sons were the chief officers in his service.
