  • 2. David recognized that the Lord had established him as king of Israel and that he had blessed his kingdom in favor of his people.
  • 3. In Jerusalem, David had more wives and fathered more sons and daughters.
  • 4. These are the names of the sons who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,
  • 5. Ibar, Elisua, Elpalete,
  • 6. Noga, Nepheg, Japhia,
  • 7. Elisama, Beeliada and Eliphelete.

David defeats the Philistines

  • 8. When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they marched in search of him. But David, when he heard of this, went out to meet them.
  • 9. The Philistines had invaded the region of Rephaim.
  • 10. David inquired of God, saying, “Should I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?” And the Lord replied, “Go, I will deliver them into your hands.”
  • 11. Then David and his soldiers marched to Baal-perazim and there David defeated them, exclaiming: “Through me God broke through my enemies like a torrent.” And that's why that place became known as Baal-Perazim.
  • 12. The Philistines had left their idols there, and David ordered them to be burned.
  • 13. The Philistines attacked the valley again.
  • 14. Again David sought guidance from God, who told him: “Do not go directly against them; go around behind them and attack them over the brambles.
  • 15. When you hear the sound of footsteps in the tops of the mulberry trees, then go out into battle, because God has gone before you to defeat the Philistine army.”
  • 16. David did as God commanded him, and they defeated the Philistines from Gibeon to Gezer.
  • 17. So David's fame spread throughout all the nations, and the Lord made all people fear him.
