David's army

  • 1. These were the men who joined David in Ziklag, where he hid from Saul son of Kish. They were valiant warriors who helped him in the war.
  • 2. They were skilled with both their right and left hands, using bows and arrows and slinging stones. They were from the tribe of Benjamin and relatives of Saul:
  • 3. Aiezer, their leader; Joash and Jeziel, the sons of Shemaah, of Gibeah; Jehu and Berachah, from Anathoth;
  • 4. Ishmaiah of Gibeon, a valiant warrior among the Thirty and their leader; Jeremiah, Jahaziel, Johanan and Jozabad of Gederath;
  • 5. Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah and Shephatiah, from Haruph;
  • 6. Elkanah, Isiah, Azarel, Joezer and Jashobeam, the Koreites;
  • 7. Joelah and Zebadiah, sons of Jeroam, of Gedor.
  • 8. Some valiant warriors from Gad joined David in his desert fortress. They were experts in warfare, trained to use shield and spear. They were like brave lions and swift as gazelles in the mountains.
  • 9. Ezer was their leader; Obadiah, second in command; Eliab, the third;
  • 10. Mismana, the fourth; Jeremiah, the fifth;
  • 11. Atai, the sixth; Eliel, the seventh;
  • 12. Johanan, the eighth; Elzabad, the ninth;
  • 13. Jeremiah, the tenth; Macbanai, the eleventh.
  • 14. All these warriors of Gad were army leaders. The smallest of them was worth a hundred men, and the largest faced a thousand.
  • 15. They crossed the Jordan in the first month of the year, when the waters were overflowing, and spread throughout all the regions inhabited by the inhabitants of the valleys, east and west.
  • 16. Also some men from Benjamin and Judah came to David's stronghold.
  • 17. David went out to meet them and said to them, “If you came in peace to help me, stay with us and you will have my protection. But if they came to betray me and hand me over to my enemies, without me having committed any crime, may the God of our ancestors see it and pass judgment.”
  • 18. Then the Spirit of God came upon Amasai, leader of the Thirty, and he said: “We are yours, O David! We are on your side, O son of Jesse! May there be peace for you, and may there be peace for those who help you, for your God helps you.” David welcomed them and placed them as leaders of the attack groups.
  • 19. Some soldiers from Manasseh deserted to David when he went with the Philistines to fight against Saul. However, they did not help the Philistines because, after consultation, their leaders sent them away, saying, “If we desert and go over to our lord Saul, we will pay with our lives.”
  • 20. These were the men of Manasseh who defected to David when he was in Ziklag: Adna, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu and Ziletai, leaders of Manasseh's military units.
  • 21. They helped David against the attacking troops, for they were all courageous warriors and leaders in the army.
  • 22. In fact, every day more soldiers came to David's help, until his army became as large as God's army.
  • 23. These are the numbers of the warriors armed for war, who came to David in Hebron, to hand over the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the Lord:

  • 38. All these warriors, ready to fight, came to Hebron with a heart set on making David king over all Israel. And all the other Israelites were also united in their purpose.
  • 39. They stayed with David for three days, celebrating with food and drink, as their relatives had provided provisions for them.
  • 40. Furthermore, people from the neighboring tribes, as well as from the distant regions of Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali, brought large amounts of provisions on donkeys, camels, mules, and oxen, as well as foods such as flour, fig cakes, grape cakes raisins, wine, olive oil, oxen and sheep.
