  • 1. Hear my prayer, O God; do not ignore my plea.
  • 2. Incline your ears to me and answer me! My thoughts disturb me, and I am distressed.
  • 3. Because of the cry of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked, for they bring iniquity upon me, and persecute me with fury.
  • 4. My heart is troubled within me, and the terrors of death have fallen upon me.
  • 5. Fear and trembling come upon me, and dread overwhelms me.
  • 6. Then I said: Oh, if I had wings like a dove! I would fly and find a resting place.
  • 7. I would flee far away, I would live in the desert. (Break)
  • 8. I would hasten to find refuge away from the fierce wind and the storm.
  • 9. Destroy them, Lord, confuse their language, for I see violence and strife in the city.
  • 10. Day and night surround it on its walls; within it there is malice and oppression.
  • 11. Destruction is in its midst, fraud and deceit do not depart from its streets.
  • 12. For it is not an enemy that insults me; if that were so, I would bear it. It is not an adversary that rises up against me; I would defend myself against him.
  • 13. But it is you, a man like me, my companion, my intimate friend.
  • 14. With whom I enjoyed sweet communion and went together to the house of God among the festive crowd.
  • 15. May death take you by surprise; let them go down to the grave alive, for there is evil and deceit among them.
  • 16. But I cry to God, and the Lord will save me.
  • 17. At evening, in the morning, and at noon, I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice.
  • 18. He rescues me unharmed from the battle against those who attack me, for there are many who are against me.
  • 19. God, who reigns from eternity, will hear and afflict them; for they never change, nor do they fear God.
  • 20. He stretches out his hand against his friends; violate their pact.
  • 21. Their words are softer than butter, but war is in their hearts; His words are smoother than oil, but they are sharp swords.
  • 22. Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never allow the righteous to be shaken.
  • 23. But you, O God, will bring them down to the pit of destruction; Bloodthirsty and deceitful men will not live half their days. But as for me, I will trust you.
