2 Chronicles – Old Testament

Ahaz is king of Judah

  • 1. Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he ruled for sixteen years in Jerusalem. Unlike his predecessor, David, he did not do what was approved by the Lord.
  • 2. He followed the ways of the kings of Israel and made metal idols to worship the Baals.
  • 3. He went so far as to burn sacrifices in the valley of Ben-Hinom and even burned his own children as an offering, following the abominable customs of the nations that the Lord had expelled before the Israelites.
  • 4. He also offered sacrifices and burned incense on the idolatrous altars, on the hills and under every leafy tree.
  • 5. Because of this the Lord his God delivered him into the hands of the king of Syria. The Arameans defeated him, took many prisoners among his people and took them to Damascus. Even Israel inflicted a great defeat on him.
  • 6. In a single day, Pekah, son of Remaliah, killed one hundred and twenty thousand mighty warriors of Judah, because Judah had abandoned the Lord, the God of his ancestors.
  • 7. Zikri, a valiant Ephraimite warrior, killed Maaseiah, the king's son, Azricam, the palace official, and Elkanah, the king's right-hand man.
  • 8. The Israelites took two hundred thousand prisoners to Samaria, among their relatives, including women, children and spoils of war.
  • 9. However, a prophet of the Lord named Oded was in Samaria and met the army. He said to them, “The Lord, the God of your ancestors, was angry with Judah and delivered them into your hands. But you went beyond the limits with your murderous fury, which reached the heavens.
  • 10. Now you are planning to enslave men and women of Judah and Jerusalem. Are you not also guilty before the Lord your God?
  • 11. Now listen to me and send back the prisoners you captured. For the wrath of the Lord is upon you.”
  • 12. Then some leaders of Ephraim, Azariah the son of Johanan, Berekiah the son of Meshilemoth, Jeizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai, confronted the men who were returning from the war and said:
  • 13. “Do not bring the prisoners here, because that would make us guilty before the Lord. Do you want to add more sin and guilt to what we already have? Our guilt is already great, and the wrath of the Lord is upon Israel.”
  • 14. Then the soldiers released the prisoners and laid out the spoils before the leaders and the assembly.
  • 15. The men mentioned above took the clothes and sandals from the spoils and dressed all those who were naked. They gave food, drink and medicine to the weakened. They put the weak on donkeys and took them back to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brothers. So they returned to Samaria.
  • 16. At this time, King Ahaz sent messengers to the king of Assyria asking for help.
  • 17. The Edomites attacked Judah again and took prisoners.
  • 18. The Philistines invaded the cities of Shephelah and southern Judah, capturing Beth-shemesh, Aijalon, Gederoth, Socoh, Timnah and their respective villages, settling in them.
  • 19. The Lord humbled Judah because of Ahaz king of Israel, because of his unrestrained conduct in Judah and because of his unfaithfulness to the Lord.
  • 20. When Tiglath-pileser, king of Assyria, arrived, he caused trouble instead of helping.
  • 21. Ahaz took treasures from the temple of the Lord, from the royal palace, and from the leaders, and offered them to the king of Assyria, but it did not help him.
  • 22. Even in this time of trouble, King Ahaz continued to be unfaithful to the Lord.
  • 23. He offered sacrifices to the gods of Damascus, who had defeated him, and said, “Since the gods of Syria have helped you, I will also offer sacrifices to them so that they will help me.” But in truth they were the cause of his ruin and the ruin of all Israel.
  • 24. Ahaz gathered the utensils from the temple of God and removed them from there. He closed the doors of the temple of the Lord and erected altars on every corner of Jerusalem.
  • 25. In all the cities of Judah, he built idolatrous altars to burn sacrifices to other gods, provoking the anger of the Lord, the God of his ancestors.
  • 26. The rest of the events of Ahaz's reign, from the beginning to the end, are recorded in the annals of the kings of Judah and Israel.
  • 27. Ahaz rested with his ancestors and was buried in the city of Jerusalem, but not in the tombs of the kings of Israel. His son Hezekiah was the next king.
