David's victories

  • 1. After that, David conquered the Philistines, subduing them and taking control of Metegue-Amah from them.
  • 2. David also defeated the Moabites. He made them lie down on the ground and measured them with a rope; the Moabites who were within the first two measures of the rope were killed, but those who were within the third measure were spared. Thus, the Moabites submitted to David, paying taxes.
  • 3. Furthermore, David defeated Hadadezer, son of Rehob, king of Zobah, when Hadadezer tried to regain control in the Euphrates River region.
  • 4. David took a thousand of his chariots, seven thousand horsemen and twenty thousand foot soldiers. He also took a hundred chariot horses and crippled everyone else.
  • 5. When the Arameans from Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David killed twenty-two thousand of them.
  • 6. David established military garrisons in the Aramean kingdom of Damascus, making them tributaries. And the Lord granted David victories wherever he went.
  • 7. David took the golden shields used by Hadadezer's officers to Jerusalem.
  • 8. He also brought a large quantity of bronze from Teba and Berotai, cities that belonged to Hadadezer.
  • 9. When Tohu, king of Hamath, heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer,
  • 10. sent his son Joram to King David to greet him and congratulate him on his victory over Hadadezer, who had been at war with Tohu. And, together with Joram, he sent gifts of silver, gold and bronze.
  • 11. King David consecrated these gifts to the Lord, just as he had done with the silver and gold taken from all the nations he had conquered:
  • 12. Edom, Moab, the Ammonites, the Philistines and the Amalekites. David also consecrated the spoils taken from Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah.
  • 13. David became even more famous when he returned from battle, in which he killed eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.
  • 14. He established military garrisons throughout the territory of Edom, and all the Edomites became his subjects. The Lord granted victories to David everywhere he went.

David's officers

  • 15. David reigned over all Israel, administering law and justice to all his people.
  • 16. Joab son of Zeruiah was commander of the army; Jehoshaphat, son of Ailude, was the royal archivist;
  • 17. Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were the priests; Seraiah was the secretary;
  • 18. Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, commanded the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and the sons of David were priests.
