Saul tries to kill David

  • 1. Saul told his son Jonathan and all his advisors about his intention to kill David. But Jonathan, who was very fond of David,
  • 2. warned him: “My father is looking for an opportunity to kill you. Be careful tomorrow morning. Go hide and stay there.
  • 3. I will go to the country and stay with my father. I’ll talk about you and then I’ll tell you what I discovered.”
  • 4. Jonathan defended David before his father Saul and said, “Do not harm your servant David; he did nothing wrong. On the contrary, it brought great benefits to the king.
  • 5. He risked his life by facing the Philistine. The Lord granted a great victory to all Israel, and you yourself saw it and were happy. So why take the life of an innocent man like David for no reason?”
  • 6. Saul heard Jonathan's words and swore an oath: “I swear by the name of the Lord that I will not kill David.”
  • 7. Then Jonathan called David and told him the whole conversation. He took him to Saul, and David returned to serve Saul as before.
  • 8. There was war again, and David went out to fight the Philistines. He inflicted a great defeat on them, and they fled from David.
  • 9. But an evil spirit sent by the Lord came upon Saul while he was sitting in his house, holding his spear. While David played the harp,
  • 10. Saul tried to impale David on the wall with his spear, but David dodged twice. The spear ended up stuck in the wall, and David managed to escape. That same night,
  • 11. Saul sent men to watch David's house and kill him in the morning. But Michal, David’s wife, warned him: “If you don’t flee tonight, tomorrow you will be dead.”
  • 12. Then Michal made David climb down through the window, and he escaped.
  • 13. Then Michal took a familiar idol and laid it on the bed, placing a goatskin pillow at the head and covering it with a cloak.
  • 14. When the men Saul had sent arrived to arrest David, Michal said, “He is sick.”
  • 15. Then Saul ordered, “Bring David to me in bed so I can kill him.”
  • 16. When the men entered, they saw the familiar idol on the bed, with the goatskin pillow at the head.
  • 17. Saul said to Michal, “Why did you deceive me and let my enemy escape?” She replied: “He threatened to kill me if I didn’t let him get away.”
  • 18. After David fled, he went to Ramah and told Samuel everything that Saul had done to him. So he and Samuel went to Naioth and remained there.
  • 19. Saul was told: “David is in Naioth, in Ramah.”
  • 20. Then Saul sent messengers to arrest him. But when they saw a group of prophets prophesying, led by Samuel, the Spirit of God came upon Saul's messengers, and they also prophesied.
  • 21. When this was reported to Saul, he sent more messengers, and they also prophesied. Saul sent messengers a third time, and they also prophesied.
  • 22. Finally, Saul went to Ramah in person. Arriving at the great cistern in Secu, he asked: “Where are Samuel and David?” And someone replied: “They are in Naioth, in Ramah.”
  • 23. Then Saul went there, but the Spirit of God came upon him, and he walked in a daze until he reached Naioth.
  • 24. Saul took off his clothes and also prophesied in the presence of Samuel. He lay naked all that day and night. Therefore, people say: “Did Saul also become a prophet?”
