Joshua – Old Testament

The land to be conquered

  • 1. Joshua was already an old man, advanced in years, when the Lord said to him: “You have not yet conquered all the land. There is still a lot of territory to be taken.
  • 2. “This is the land that remains: all the regions of the Philistines and Geshurites;
  • 3. from the river Shihor, near Egypt, to the territory of Ekron in the north. This area is considered Canaanite and includes the region of the Aveites, that is, the five Philistine chiefs who rule Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath and Ekron.
  • 4. There remains also all the land of the Canaanites, extending south from Ara of the Sidonians to Aphek, the region of the Amorites,
  • 5. that of the Gibleans and all Lebanon on the east, from Baal-Gad, at the foot of Mount Hermon, to Lebo-Hamate.
  • 6. “All the inhabitants of the mountains, from Lebanon to Misrephoth-Maim, that is, the Sidonians, I myself will drive out from the presence of the Israelites. But you, Joshua, must distribute this land as an inheritance to Israel, as I have commanded.
  • 7. Now divide this land between the nine tribes and half of the tribe of Manasseh.”

The division of the land east of the Jordan

  • 8. The other half of the tribe of Manasseh, together with the tribes of Reuben and Gad, had already received their inheritance east of the Jordan, as Moses, the servant of the Lord, had appointed them.
  • 9. This land extended from Aroer, on the banks of the Arnon river, to the city in the middle of the river valley, including the entire plateau of Medeba as far as Dibon,
  • 10. and all the cities of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the border with the Ammonites.
  • 11. It also included Gilead, the territory of the Geshurites and Maachathites, all the region from Mount Hermon, and all Bashan as far as Salkah,
  • 12. that is, the whole kingdom of Og, king of Bashan, who had reigned in Ashteroth and Edrei. Og was one of the last remaining Rephaim. Moses had defeated them and taken their land.
  • 13. But the Israelites did not expel the Geshurites and Maachathites, allowing them to live among them to this day.
  • 14. However, the tribe of Levi was not given any inheritance, for the offerings made by fire to the Lord, the God of Israel, were their inheritance, as the Lord had already commanded.
  • 15. Moses had given the following territory to the tribe of Reuben, according to their clans:
  • 16. From Aroer, on the banks of the river Arnon, and from the city in the middle of the valley, to the plateau of Medeba;
  • 17. Heshbon and all its cities in the highlands, including Dibon, Bamoth-Baal, Beth-Baal-mehon,
  • 18. Jazah, Kedemoth, Mephaath,
  • 19. Kiriathaim, Shibmah, Zereth-shaar, on the slope of the valley,
  • 20. Beth-peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth.
  • 21. These were all the cities of the plateau and all the territory of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon. Moses had defeated him, as well as the Midianite leaders, Evi, Rechem, Zur, Hur and Reba, allies of Sihon, who lived in that land.
  • 22. In addition to those who were killed in battle, the Israelites killed Balaam, the son of Beor, the soothsayer.
  • 23. The border of the tribe of Reuben was the Jordan River. These cities and their villages were the inheritance of the Reubenites, according to their clans.
  • 24. Moses also gave the following territory to the tribe of Gad, according to their clans:
  • 25. The territory of Jazar, all the cities of Gilead, and half the territory of the Ammonites, as far as Aroer, near Rabbah.
  • 26. It extended from Heshbon to Ramath-mishpah and Bethonim, and from Mahanaim to the territory of Debir.
  • 27. In the Jordan Valley, it included Beth-Aram, Beth-Nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, as well as the rest of the domain of Sihon king of Heshbon. It spanned the east bank of the Jordan to the Sea of Chinereth.
  • 28. This region, with its cities and towns, was the inheritance of the Gadites, according to their clans.
  • 29. Moses also gave half of the tribe of Manasseh, that is, half of the descendants of Manasseh, according to their clans, the following territory:
  • 30. The territory that extended from Mahanaim, including all the region of Bashan, all the domain of Og king of Bashan, to the sixty cities of Jair in Bashan.
  • 31. Half of Gilead, Ashteroth and Edrei, cities in the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were assigned to half of the descendants of Machir son of Manasseh, according to their clans.
  • 32. This was the inheritance that Moses distributed to the tribes when he was in the plain of Moab, across the Jordan, east of Jericho.
  • 33. However, Moses did not give any inheritance to the tribe of Levi, for the Lord, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, as the Lord had already told them.
