Joshua - Old Testament
Joshua – Old Testament
  • 1. When the entire nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the Lord spoke to Joshua:
  • 2. “Choose twelve men from the people, one from each tribe,
  • 3. and tell them to take twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, from the place where the priests stood. Take them with you to the place where you will spend the night.”
  • 4. Joshua called together the twelve men he chose from among the Israelites, one from each tribe,
  • 5. and said to them, “Go ahead of the ark of the Lord your God to the middle of the Jordan. Each of you must carry a stone on your shoulders, according to the number of the tribes of Israel.
  • 6. These stones will be a sign for you. In the future, when your children ask, 'What do these stones mean?' ,
  • 7. you will say that the waters of the Jordan were stopped before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When the ark crossed the Jordan, the waters were stopped. These stones will be an eternal memorial for the people of Israel.”
  • 8. The Israelites did as Joshua commanded. They took twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, according to the number of the tribes of Israel, as the Lord had commanded Joshua, and took them to the camp, where they left them.
  • 9. Joshua also set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, at the place where the priests carrying the ark of the covenant had stood. And they are there to this day.
  • 10. The priests who carried the ark remained standing in the middle of the Jordan until the people did everything that the Lord had commanded Joshua through Moses. Then the people hurriedly crossed.
  • 11. When everyone had finished crossing, the ark of the Lord and the priests passed over to the other side, in front of the people.
  • 12. Men from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh crossed over armed, ahead of the Israelites, as Moses had instructed.
  • 13. About forty thousand armed men passed before the Lord towards the plain of Jericho.
  • 14. That day the Lord exalted Joshua before all Israel, and they respected him as long as he lived, just as they had respected Moses.
  • 15. Then the Lord said to Joshua:
  • 16. “Command the priests who carry the ark of the covenant to come out of the Jordan.”
  • 17. Joshua ordered the priests to leave.
  • 18. As soon as the priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord came out of the Jordan, as soon as they set foot on dry land, the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and covered the banks as before.
  • 19. On the tenth day of the first month, the people went up from the Jordan and camped at Gilgal, on the eastern border of Jericho.
  • 20. In Gilgal, Joshua set up the twelve stones that had been taken from the Jordan.
  • 21. He said to the Israelites, “In the future, when children ask their parents, 'What do these stones mean?' ,
  • 22. Explain to them that Israel crossed the Jordan on dry land.
  • 23. For the Lord your God dried up the Jordan before you until you crossed over. Just as He did with the Red Sea, the Lord dried up the Jordan before us until we passed over.
  • 24. He did this so that all the people of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, and so that you may always fear the Lord your God.”
