Animals that you can and cannot eat

  • 1. The Lord spoke further to Moses and Aaron, saying to them:
  • 2. Speak to the children of Israel, saying: These are the animals that you will eat of all the animals that are on the earth.
  • 3. Everything that has split claws and that chews the cud among the animals, that you shall eat.
  • 4. But these you shall not eat, among those that chew the cud or among those that have split nails: the camel, because it chews the cud but does not have split nails; for you it will be unclean.
  • 5. The rabbit, because it chews its cud, but does not have split nails; for you it will be unclean.
  • 6. The hare, because it chews the cud, but has no cloven nails; for you it will be unclean.
  • 7. The pig, because it has split claws and is divided into two claws, but does not chew the cud; for you it will be unclean.
  • 8. You shall not eat their flesh, nor touch their carcasses; for you they will be unclean.
  • 9. These you shall eat of everything that is in the waters: everything that has fins and scales, in the waters, in the seas and in the rivers, this you shall eat.
  • 10. But everything that does not have fins or scales, in the seas and in the rivers, of every creeping thing in the waters, and of every living thing that is in the waters, these will be an abomination to you.
  • 11. And they will be an abomination to you; you shall not eat their flesh, and their carcasses you shall consider an abomination.
  • 12. Whatever has neither fins nor scales in the waters will be an abomination to you.
  • 13. Of the birds, these are the ones you will abhor; they will not be eaten; are abominations: the eagle, the broken bone, the sea eagle,
  • 14. The vulture, and the vulture after his kind,
  • 15. Every raven according to its kind,
  • 16. The ostrich, and the owl, and the gull, and the hawk after his kind,
  • 17. And the owl, and the pelican, and the cormorant,
  • 18. And the stork, and the heron after his kind, and the hoopoe, and the bat.
  • 19. Every creeping thing that flies, that walks on four feet, will be an abomination to you.
  • 20. Only these shall ye eat of every creeping thing that flies, that walketh upon four feet: whatsoever hath legs upon its feet, to leap with them upon the earth.
  • 21. But of these you shall eat every locust, every composition of locust, locust and cricket, according to their kind.
  • 22. These will be unclean to you; you shall not eat of them; their carcasses you will have as an abomination.
  • 23. But every winged thing that has four feet will be unclean to you.
  • 24. And because of these you shall be unclean: whoever touches their carcasses shall be unclean until the evening.
  • 25. And everyone who carries their carcasses will wash his clothes, and will be unclean until the evening.
  • 26. Any animal that has split claws but does not chew the cud or has split claws is unclean to you; whoever touches them will be unclean.
  • 27. And everything that walks on its feet, among all the animals that walk on four feet, you will consider them an abomination; Whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until the evening.
  • 28. And whoever carries away their carcasses must wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening; This shall be a statute for ever to you, to all generations.
  • 29. And this one will be unclean to you among the animals that creep on the earth: the weasel, and the mouse, and the tree mouse according to its kind,
  • 30. And the hedgehog, and the lizard, and the lizard, and the slug, and the chameleon.
  • 31. These will be unclean to you among all creeping things; Whoever touches them after they are dead will be unclean until the evening.
  • 32. And everything on which any of them falls when he is dead will be unclean; whether of any wooden vessel, or garment, or skin, or sackcloth, any work that is done with it; for this one will be unclean; he will be unclean until the evening, and in this way he will be cleansed.
  • 33. Every earthen vessel into which one of them falls, everything that is in it will be unclean, and the vessel into which it falls will be broken.
  • 34. Any food that is eaten on which water is poured will be unclean; and all drink that is drunk from any such vessel will be unclean.
  • 35. And everything on which one of them falls when he is dead will be unclean; whether oven or stove, they will be torn to pieces; for they are unclean, and they will be unclean to you.
  • 36. Only the fountains and cisterns, wells of water, will be clean; but whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean.
  • 37. And if any part of one of them falls on any seed that is sown, it will be cleansed;
  • 38. But if water is poured on the seed, and any of it falls on it, it will be unclean to you.
  • 39. And when any animal that serves you as food dies, whoever touches its carcass will be unclean until the evening.
  • 40. And he that eateth of his carcase shall wash his clothes, and shall be unclean until the evening; also whoever carries away his dead body shall wash his clothes, and shall be unclean until the evening.
  • 41. And every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth shall be an abomination unto you; it will not be eaten.
  • 42. Whatever walks on its belly, and whatever walks on four or more feet, of all the animals that move on the ground, you shall not eat; because they are an abomination.
  • 43. Do not make yourselves abhorred by any creeping thing that creeps, nor defile yourselves by them, lest you become unclean by them.
  • 44. For I am the Lord your God; therefore you will sanctify yourselves and be holy, because I am holy; and you shall not defile yourselves with any creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.
  • 45. For I am the Lord, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God; therefore you will be holy, because I am holy.
  • 46. This is the law of beasts, and of birds, and of every living creature that moves in the water, and of every creature that moves on the earth;
  • 47. To make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the animals that can be eaten and the animals that cannot be eaten.
