  • 2. Get up, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel, your mother's father, and take from there a wife from the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother.
  • 3. And may the Almighty God bless you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, that you may be a multitude of peoples;
  • 4. And give you the blessing of Abraham, to you and to your descendants with you, that you may inherit the land of your sojourns, which God gave to Abraham.

  • 6. And Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and had sent him to Paddan-aram, to take for himself a wife from there, and that when he had blessed him, he had commanded him, saying, Take no wife of the daughters of Canaan;

Jacob's Dream at Bethel

  • 10. And Jacob left Beersheba, and went to Haran.
  • 11. And he came to a place where he spent the night, for the sun was setting; and he took one of the stones from that place, and put it for his pillow, and lay down in that place.
  • 12. And he dreamed: and behold a ladder set on the earth, the top of which reached the heavens; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending upon it;
  • 13. And behold, the Lord stood upon her, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac; I will give this land on which you lie to you and your descendants;
  • 14. And your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and will extend to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south; and in you and in your descendants all the families of the earth will be blessed;
  • 15. And behold, I am with you, and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have fulfilled what I have spoken to you.
  • 16. And Jacob awoke from his sleep, and said, Verily the Lord is in this place; and I didn't know it.
  • 17. And he was afraid, and said, How terrible is this place! This is no other place than the house of God; and this is the gate of heaven.
  • 18. And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone which he had put for his pillow, and set it for a pillar, and poured oil upon it;
  • 19. And he called the name of that place Bethel; However, the name of this city was previously Luz.
  • 20. And Jacob made a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and keep me in this journey that I go, and give me bread to eat, and raiment to wear,
  • 21. And I return to my father's house in peace, the Lord will be my God;
  • 22. And this stone that I have set up for a pillar will be the house of God; and of all that you give me, I will certainly give you a tenth.
