Abram and Lot separate

  • 1. So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negeb, he and his wife, with all that he had, and Lot with him.
  • 2. And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver and in gold.
  • 3. And he journeyed from the south to Bethel, to the place where his tent was first, between Bethel and Ai,
  • 4. to the place of the altar that he had once made there; and there Abram called on the name of the Lord.
  • 5. And Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks and herds and tents.
  • 6. And the earth could not sustain them both, that they should dwell together; because his possessions were many; so that they could not dwell together.
  • 7. Therefore there was contention between the herdsmen of Abram's cattle and the herdsmen of Lot's cattle; and at that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites dwelt in that land.
  • 8. Abram said to Lot: Now let there be no strife between you and me, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are close relatives.
  • 9. Is not the whole earth before you? I ask you to depart from me; if you go left, I will go right; if you go right, I'll go left.
  • 10. And Lot lifted up his eyes and saw the whole plain of the Jordan, that it was well watered (before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah), like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, until you came to Zoar.
  • 11. So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan, and Lot set out toward the east; and they separated from each other.
  • 12. Abram lived in the land of Canaan, and Lot lived in the cities of the plain and pitched his tents as far as Sodom.
  • 13. Now the men of Sodom were evil and great sinners against the Lord.
  • 14. The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had departed from him, Lift up your eyes now, and look from the place where you are, northward, southward, eastward, and westward;
  • 15. For all the land that you see I will give to you and to your descendants forever.
  • 16. And I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can count the dust of the earth, then your descendants will be able to count.
  • 17. Arise, go through the land, in its length and in its breadth; because I will give it to you.
  • 18. And Abram moved his tents and went to live in the oak groves of Mamre, which are by Hebron; and he built an altar there to the Lord.
