- 1. Surely God is good to those who are upright, to those with a pure heart.
- 2. As for me, however, I almost lost my balance; I almost slipped.
- 3. For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
- 4. They do not face difficulties; your body is healthy and strong.
- 5. They do not suffer the afflictions of mortals, nor are they affected by the diseases that afflict them.
- 6. Therefore pride surrounds them like a necklace, and violence covers them like a cloak.
- 7. Evil bursts out of their eyes; in their hearts machinations boil.
- 8. They mock and speak maliciously; with arrogance they oppress others.
- 9. They lift their mouths to the heavens and their tongues roam the earth.
- 10. That's why the people follow them and drink their words, as if they were drinking plenty of water.
- 11. They say, “How can God know? Does the Most High have knowledge?”
- 12. Such are the wicked; they are always confident, and increase their wealth.
- 13. It was no use for me to keep my heart pure and wash my hands in innocence,
- 14. for I was afflicted all day long and punished every morning.
- 15. If I had said, “I will speak like them,” I would have betrayed your children's generation.
- 16. When I tried to understand all this, I found it too difficult for me,
- 17. until I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood the fate of the wicked.
- 18. Surely you put them on slippery ground and lead them to destruction.
- 19. How suddenly they are destroyed, utterly consumed with terror!
- 20. They are like a dream when you wake up; When you arise, Lord, you will make them disappear.
- 21. When my heart was bitter and I felt jealous inside,
- 22. acted like a fool and ignorant; he was a beast before you.
- 23. Yet I am always with you; you hold my right hand.
- 24. You guide me with your advice, and then you will receive me with honor.
- 25. Whom do I have in heaven besides you? On earth, I want nothing more than to be with you.
- 26. My body and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
- 27. Those who abandon you will certainly perish; you destroy all infidels.
- 28. As for me, it is good to be close to God; I make the Lord God my refuge and proclaim all your works.
