Invitations of wisdom and madness

  • 1. Wisdom built her dwelling, Raised her seven columns;
  • 2. He slaughtered the animals for the banquet, prepared the wine and set the table.
  • 3. He sent his servants, calling from the highest points of the city:
  • 4. “Come, you simple and unwise ones!” And to those lacking understanding, she says:
  • 5. “Come, eat my bread, And drink the wine I have prepared.
  • 6. Leave foolishness and live; Walk the path of understanding.”
  • 7. He who corrects the scoffer Draws contempt upon himself; And he who rebukes the wicked Suffers the insult of his tongue.
  • 8. Do not rebuke the scoffer, Lest he hate you; Rebuke the wise man, and he will love you.
  • 9. Give instruction to the wise, And he will become even wiser; Teach the righteous, And he will grow in wisdom.
  • 10. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
  • 11. For through me your days will be multiplied, And years of life will be added to you.
  • 12. If you are wise, you will be wise for yourself; If you are a scorner, only you will bear the consequences.
  • 13. Folly is the troubled woman, And lack of knowledge is her invitation.
  • 14. She sits at the door of her house, High above the city,
  • 15. Call those who pass by, Those who follow their path straight, saying:
  • 16. “Come, you simple and unwise ones!” And to those lacking understanding, she says:
  • 17. “Stolen waters are sweet, And bread eaten in secret is pleasant.”
  • 18. But they do not know that the dead are there; That your guests are in the depths of the grave.
