Zelophehad's daughters

  • 1. The daughters of Zelophehad, son of Hepher, grandson of Gilead, great-grandson of Machir, great-grandson of Manasseh, from the families of Manasseh son of Joseph, came forward, and their names were Mahalah, Noah, Hogla, Milcah and Tirzah.
  • 2. They appeared before Moses, the priest Eleazar, the leaders and the entire community, at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, and said:
  • 3. “Our father died in the desert. He was not among those who joined Korah in rebelling against the Lord, but he died because of his own sin and left no sons.
  • 4. Why should our father's name disappear from his family because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”
  • 5. Moses presented the case before the Lord,
  • 6. and the Lord said to Moses:
  • 7. “The daughters of Zelophehad are right. You will certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father's relatives and transfer their father's inheritance to them.
  • 8. Tell the Israelites: If a man dies and has no son, you will transfer his inheritance to his daughter.
  • 9. If he has no daughter, they will give his inheritance to his brothers.
  • 10. If he has no brothers, they will give his inheritance to his father's brothers.
  • 11. If his father has no brothers, they will give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his family, so that he may possess it. This will be a perpetual statute for the Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.”

Joshua successor of Moses

  • 12. The Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain of Abarim and see the land that I gave to the Israelites.
  • 13. After you see her, you too will be gathered to your people, like your brother Aaron,
  • 14. for when the community rebelled in the wilderness of Zin, you two disobeyed me concerning the water. You have failed to manifest my holiness before the Israelites.”
  • 15. Moses said to the Lord:
  • 16. “Give to the Lord, the God of the spirits of all mankind, a man over this community
  • 17. to go out and return before them, leading them. In this way, the Lord’s community will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”
  • 18. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hands on him.
  • 19. Have him appear before Eleazar the priest and the entire community, and give Joshua his instructions before them.
  • 20. Make him share in your authority, so that the entire community of Israelites will obey you.
  • 21. He will present the questions before Eleazar the priest, who will consult the Lord through the Urim. They will go out and come in according to his word, both he and all the Israelites with him, the entire community.”
  • 22. Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and presented him before the priest Eleazar and the entire community.
  • 23. He laid his hands on him and gave him his instructions, as the Lord had commanded through Moses.
