The second census

  • 1. After the plague, the Lord said to Moses and Eleazar, son of the priest Aaron:
  • 2. “Take a census of the entire community of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, according to the houses of their ancestors, all the Israelites fit to serve in the army.”
  • 3. Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke to them in the plains of Moab, by the Jordan, near Jericho, and said:
  • 4. “Take a census of all who, from twenty years of age or older, are fit to serve in the army of Israel.”
  • 5. The Israelites who were registered were these:
  • The tribe of Reuben, the eldest son of Israel, their descendants were numbered according to their families, and according to the houses of their ancestors, all who could serve in the army,
  • 6. all men twenty years old and above, fit to serve in the army, seven thousand five hundred.
  • 7. Reuben's families were:
  • of the Hezronites, the family of the Hezronites;
  • of the Carmelites, the family of Carmelites;
  • 8. These were the families of Reuben. Those registered were six thousand five hundred.
  • 9. Of the tribe of Simeon the descendants were numbered according to their families, and according to the houses of their ancestors, all who could serve in the army,
  • 10. all men from twenty years old and above, fit to serve in the army, according to their families. Those registered were fifty-nine thousand three hundred.
  • 11. Simeon's families were:
  • of the Nemuelites, the family of the Nemuelites;
  • of the Jaminites, the family of the Jaminites;
  • of the Hyacinthites, the family of the Hyacinthites;
  • 12. of the Jairites, the family of the Jairites;
  • of the Zerahites, the family of the Zerahites;
  • of the Saulites, the family of the Saulites.
  • 13. These were the families of Simeon. Those registered were twenty-two thousand two hundred.
  • 14. Of the tribe of Gad the descendants were numbered according to their families, and according to the houses of their ancestors, all who could serve in the army,
  • 15. all men from twenty years old and above, fit to serve in the army, according to their families. Those registered were forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.
  • 16. The families of Gad were:
  • of the Zephonites, the family of the Zephonites;
  • of the hagitas, the family of the hagitas;
  • of the Shunemites, the family of the Shunemites;
  • 17. of the Oznites, the family of Oznites;
  • of hermits, the family of hermits;
  • 18. of the Arodites, the family of the Arodites;
  • of the Arielites, the family of the Arielites.
  • 19. These were the families of Gad. Those registered were forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.
  • 20. Of the children of Judah, by their families, the following were numbered:

  • 21. Of the sons of Perez were:
  • of the Hezronites, the family of the Hezronites;

  • 22. These were the families of Judah. Those registered were seventy-six thousand five hundred.
  • 23. Of the children of Issachar, by their families, were enumerated:
  • of the Tolaites, the family of the Tolaites;
  • of the Puvites, the family of the Puvites;
  • of the Jasubites, the family of the Jasubites;
  • 24. of the Simonites, the family of the Simonites.
  • 25. These were the families of Issachar. Those registered were sixty-four thousand three hundred.
  • 26. Of the children of Zebulun, by their families, the following were numbered:
  • of the Seredites, the family of the Seredites;
  • of the Elonites, the family of the Elonites;
  • of the Jalielites, the family of the Jalielites.
  • 27. These were the families of Zebulun. Those registered were sixty thousand and five hundred.
  • 28. Of the sons of Joseph, they were numbered, from the tribe of Ephraim, by their families, according to the houses of their ancestors, all who were able to serve in the army,
  • 29. all men from twenty years old and above, fit to serve in the army, according to their families. Those registered were forty thousand and five hundred.
  • 30. Of the families of Ephraim were:
  • of the Somaites, the family of the Somaites;
  • of the Hepherites, the family of the Hepherites;
  • of the Beckerites, the family of the Beckerites.
  • 31. Of the sons of Bequer were:
  • of the Tafuaítas, the family of the Tafuaítas;
  • of the Phrenonites, the family of the Phrenonites;
  • 32. These were the families of Ephraim. Those registered were thirty-two thousand and five hundred.
  • 33. Of the sons of Manasseh, by their families, the following were numbered:
  • of the Maquirites, the family of the Maquirites;
  • of the Gileadites, the family of the Gileadites.
  • 34. Of the children of Gilead were:
  • of the Izerites, the family of the Izerites;
  • of the Helekites, the family of the Helekites;
  • 35. of the Asrielites, the family of the Asrielites;
  • of the Shechemites, the family of the Shechemites;
  • 36. of the Hepherites, the family of the Hepherites.
  • 37. Machir's son was Gilead; Gilead's father was he.
  • 38. These were the families of Manasseh. Those registered were fifty-two thousand and seven hundred.
  • 39. These were the descendants of Dan, by their families:
  • of the Shumites, the family of the Shumites.
  • These were the families of Dan.
  • 40. All those registered among the descendants of Dan were sixty-two thousand and seven hundred.
  • 41. Of the sons of Asher, by their families, were numbered:
  • of the Imnitas, the family of the Imnitas;
  • of the Isuits, the family of the Isuits;
  • of the Beriites, the family of the Beriites.
  • 42. Of the sons of Berias were:
  • of the Heberites, the family of the Heberites;
  • of the Malchielites, the family of the Malquielites.
  • 43. These were the families of Asher. Those registered were fifty-three thousand and four hundred.
  • 44. Of the sons of Naphtali, by their families, were enumerated:
  • of the Jazeelites, the family of the Jazeelites;
  • of the Guniites, the family of the Guniites;
  • 45. of the Jelekites, the family of the Jelekites;
  • of the Helephites, the family of the Helephites;
  • 46. of the Sumites, the Sumite family.
  • These were the families of Naphtali. Those registered were forty-five thousand and four hundred.
  • 47. These were those who were registered among the Israelites, six hundred and one thousand, seven hundred and thirty.
  • 48. The Lord said to Moses:
  • 49. “Distribute the land in inheritance among these tribes in proportion to the number of names.
  • 50. Increase the inheritance of a tribe in proportion to the number of its population; diminish the inheritance of another tribe in proportion to the number of its population. Each will receive his inheritance according to the census.
  • 51. The land will be distributed as an inheritance by lot among the tribes, according to the names of their ancestors. The inheritance will be distributed by lot.
  • 52. Now the Levites will be registered according to their families. All men aged one month and above will be registered.”
  • 53. The Levites were numbered according to their families, all those who were one month old or older, thirty-two thousand.
  • 54. The tribe of Levi was not counted along with the other tribes, because they would not receive an inheritance among the Israelites.
  • 55. This was done to the Israelites, according to the Lord's orders given to Moses.
  • 56. These are those registered by the Israelites, according to the families of their ancestors: all the men over twenty years of age who could serve in the army of Israel were registered,
  • 57. there were six hundred and one thousand seven hundred and thirty.
  • 58. But the Levites were not numbered among them by the Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.
  • 59. So the Israelites did everything as the Lord commanded Moses, according to their tribes and families.
  • 60. After this, the Levites were enumerated by their families, according to their tribes, according to the list of names of all the males from one month old and upward who were enumerated,
  • 61. there were twenty-three thousand, all the men from one month old and above who were registered, as they were not registered among the Israelites. They would receive no inheritance among the Israelites.
  • 62. These were those who were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, when they numbered the Israelites in the plains of Moab, by the Jordan, near Jericho.
  • 63. None of those who were numbered by Moses and the priest Eleazar, when they numbered the Israelites in the wilderness of Sinai, were alive,
  • 64. for none of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun, survived the wilderness.
  • 65. For the Lord had told them that they would certainly die in the wilderness. And none of them survived, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.
