Numbers – Old Testament

Balaam's first prophecy

  • 1. Then Balaam said to Balak: Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bulls and seven rams.
  • 2. Balak did as Balaam said; and Balak and Balaam offered bulls and rams on every altar.
  • 3. Then Balaam said to Balak, Stand by your burnt offering, and I will go; Perhaps the LORD will come out to meet me, and whatever he shows me I will declare to you. And he went to meet his sacrifice.
  • 4. And God went out to meet Balaam; and he said unto him, Seven altars have I ordained, and on every altar I have offered a bull and a ram.
  • 5. Then the LORD put the word in Balaam's mouth and said, Return to Balak and you will speak in this way.
  • 6. So he returned to him, and behold, he was with his burnt offering, he and all the princes of the Moabites.
  • 7. And he took his proverb, and said, Balak, king of the Moabites, from the mountains of the East brought me out of Aram: Come, curse me Jacob, and come, detest Israel.
  • 8. How can I curse someone whom God has not cursed? And how shall I detest whom the LORD hath not detested?
  • 9. For I see him from the top of the rocks, and I see him from the hills; behold, a people that will dwell alone among the nations will not be numbered.
  • 10. Who will count the dust of Jacob? And the number of the fourth part of Israel, who can count it? Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my end be like theirs!
  • 11. Then Balak said to Balaam: What have you done to me? I brought you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have only blessed them.
  • 12. But he answered, Shall I not be careful to speak what the LORD puts in my mouth?

Balaam's second prophecy

  • 13. Then Balak said to him, Come with me to another place, where you will see him; you will only see the end of it, but you will not see the whole of it; and from there he curses me.
  • 14. And he brought him to the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.
  • 15. Then he said to Balak, Stand here with your burnt offering, and I will meet the LORD there.
  • 16. And the LORD met Balaam, and put the word in his mouth, and said unto him, Return unto Balak, and thou shalt speak thus.
  • 17. So he came to him, and behold, he was standing by his burnt offering, and the princes of the Moabites with him; and Balak asked him, What did the LORD say?
  • 18. Then he lifted up his proverb and said, Arise, Balak, and hear; Listen to me, son of Zippor.
  • 19. God is not a man that he should lie, nor a son of man that he should repent; would he say and not do it? Would I speak, and not confirm it?
  • 20. Behold, I have received a commandment to bless; for I have been blessed, and I cannot revoke it.
  • 21. He saw no iniquity in Jacob, nor saw wickedness in Israel; the LORD his God is with him, and the voice of the King is heard in him.
  • 22. God brought them out of Egypt; his strength is like that of a wild ox.
  • 23. For there is no omen in Jacob, nor divination in Israel; In due time it will be said of Jacob and Israel: This is what God has done!
  • 24. Behold, the people arise like a lioness and like a lion; He will not lie down until he has eaten his prey and drunk the blood of the dead.
  • 25. Then Balak said to Balaam: If you do not curse him, in any case, however little you curse him.
  • 26. But Balaam answered Balak, Have I not spoken unto thee, saying, Whatever the LORD hath spoken, that will I do?

Balaam's third prophecy

  • 27. And Balak said to Balaam, Come now, please, and I will take you to another place; perhaps, right in the eyes of God, you curse him there.
  • 28. And Balak led Balaam to the top of Peor, which overlooks the wilderness.
  • 29. And Balaam said to Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bulls and seven rams.
  • 30. So Balak did as Balaam said and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.
