List of priests and Levites

  • 1. These were the priests and the Levites who returned with Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and with Jeshua: Seraiah, Jeremiah, Ezra,
  • 2. Amarias, Maluque, Hatus,
  • 3. Shecaniah, Rehum, Meremoth,
  • 4. Ido, Ginetom, Abijah,
  • 5. Miamim, Maadiah, Bilga,
  • 6. Shemaiah, Joiaribe, Jedaiah,
  • 7. Salu, Amoque, Hilkiah and Jedaiah. They were the leaders of the priests and their companions in Jeshua's day.
  • 8. The Levites were Jeshua, Binui, Cadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and also Mattaniah, who, with his companions, was responsible for the songs of thanksgiving.
  • 9. Baquebuquias and Uni, his companions, stood before them to answer.
  • 10. Jeshua was the father of Jehoiakim, Jehoiakim was the father of Eliashib, Eliashib was the father of Jehoiada,

  • 15. of the family of Harim, Adna; of the family of Meremoth, Helcai;
  • 16. from the family of Iddo, Zechariah; of the family of Ginetom, Meshullam;
  • 17. of the family of Abijah, Zichri; from the family of Miniamim and Maadiah, Piltai;
  • 18. of the family of Bilga, Samua; from the family of Shemaiah, Jonathan;
  • 19. from the family of Joiarib, Mathenai; from the family of Jedaiah, Uzi;
  • 20. of the family of Salai, Calai; of the family of Amoque, Heber;
  • 21. of the family of Hilkiah, Hashabiah; of the family of Jedaiah, Nathanael.
  • 22. In the days of Eliashib, the heads of the families of the Levites and the priests, Jehoiada, Johanan, and Jaddua, were recorded during the reign of Darius the Persian.
  • 23. The heads of the families of the Levites were Hashabiah, Sherebiah, Jeshua the son of Kadmiel, and their companions, who stood before them when they sang praises and thanksgiving; one group responded to the other, as commanded by David, the man of God.
  • 24. Mattaniah, Bakbuchiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon and Acube were the doorkeepers; they watched the storerooms by the doors.
  • 25. They served in the days of Jehoiakim son of Jeshua, grandson of Jozadak, and in the days of Nehemiah the governor and Ezra the priest.
  • 26. On the occasion of the dedication of the walls of Jerusalem, the Levites were summoned and brought from where they lived to Jerusalem, in order to celebrate the dedication with joy, singing songs of praise and thanksgiving, accompanied by cymbals, harps and lyres.

The consecration of the wall

  • 27. The singers were brought from around Jerusalem, from the villages of the Nehophatites,
  • 28. from Beth-gilgal and from the regions of Geba and Azmaveth, for these singers had built villages for themselves around Jerusalem.
  • 29. The priests and the Levites purified themselves ceremonially and also purified the people, the gates and the walls.
  • 30. Then I ordered the leaders of Judah to go up to the top of the walls. I also designated two large choirs to give thanks. One of them advanced over the wall, to the right, towards Porta do Esterco.
  • 31. Hosaiah and half of the leaders of Judah followed them.
  • 32. Azariah, Ezra, Meshullam,
  • 33. Judah, Benjamin, Shemaiah, Jeremiah,
  • 34. and some priests with trumpets, besides Zechariah, son of Jonathan, grandson of Shemaiah, great-grandson of Mattaniah, who was the son of Micaiah, grandson of Zeccur, great-grandson of Asaph,
  • 35. and his companions, Shemaiah, Azareel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nathanael, Judah and Hanani, who played the musical instruments prescribed by David, the man of God. Ezra the scribe went ahead of them.
  • 36. Arriving at the Fountain Gate, they went directly up the steps of the City of David, on the way up to the wall, and passed over the house of David to the Water Gate, on the east side.
  • 37. The second choir advanced in the opposite direction. I accompanied them as they went over the wall, taking half the people with me; we passed through the Torre dos Fornos to Porta Larga,
  • 38. over the Ephraim Gate, the Jesana Gate, the Fish Gate, the Tower of Hananeel and the Tower of the Hundred, as far as the Sheep Gate. Next to Porta da Guarda, we stopped.
  • 39. The two choirs responsible for thanksgiving took their places in the temple of God, which I also did, accompanied by half of the leaders
  • 40. and of the priests Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamim, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah and Hananiah, with their trumpets,
  • 41. besides Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Johanan, Malchiah, Elam and Ezer. The choirs sang under the direction of Jezraiah.
  • 42. That day they offered great sacrifices with joy, for God had filled them with great joy. The women and children also rejoiced, and the sounds of Jerusalem's joy could be heard from afar.
  • 43. That day, even in the face of difficulties, they offered generous sacrifices, as God filled their hearts with joy. The women and children also rejoiced, and the joyful sounds of Jerusalem echoed in the distance.
  • 44. On that occasion, they were appointed responsible for the deposits where offerings, first fruits and tithes were received. From the harvests around the cities, they brought the portions determined by the Law for the priests and the Levites. And the people of Judah were pleased with the priests and the Levites who served in the temple.
  • 45. They faithfully fulfilled the worship of their God and the purification ceremonies, following the instructions of David and his son Solomon.
  • 46. Since the days of David and the leader Asaph, there were rulers for singers and for songs of praise and gratitude to God.
  • 47. During the rule of Zerubbabel and Nehemiah, all of Israel brought daily offerings to support the singers and doorkeepers. They also separated the portion due to the other Levites, and the Levites separated the portion destined for Aaron's descendants.
