The new inhabitants of Jerusalem

  • 1. The leaders of the people decided to live in Jerusalem, and by lot one in ten people came to live in the holy city, while the other nine remained in their own cities.
  • 2. The people blessed all those who volunteered to live in Jerusalem.
  • 3. Some Israelites, priests, Levites, temple servants, and descendants of Solomon's servants lived in the cities of Judah, each in his own inheritance. These were the leaders of the province who settled in Jerusalem.
  • 4. Besides them, there were people from Judah and Benjamin who came to live in Jerusalem: Among the descendants of Judah: Athaiah, son of Uzziah, grandson of Zechariah, great-grandson of Amariah; Amariah was the son of Shephatiah and grandson of Mahalaleel, a descendant of Perez.
  • 5. Maaseiah, son of Baruch, grandson of Col-Hozeh, great-grandson of Hazaiah; Hazaiah was the son of Adaiah, grandson of Jehoiarib and great-grandson of Zechariah, a descendant of Shelah.
  • 6. The descendants of Perez who lived in Jerusalem were 468 mighty men.
  • 7. Among the descendants of Benjamin: Salu, son of Meshullam, grandson of Joed, great-grandson of Pedaiah; Pedaiah was the son of Kolaiah, grandson of Maaseiah, great-grandson of Ithiel, great-great-grandson of Jesaiah;
  • 8. and his followers, Gabai and Salai, numbered 928 men.
  • 9. Joel son of Zichri was the chief officer over them, and Judah son of Hassenua was in charge of the second district of the city.
  • 10. From the priests:
  • 11. Seraiah, son of Hilkiah, grandson of Meshullam, great-grandson of Zadok – Zadok was the son of Meraioth, grandson of Ahitub, overseer of the house of God –
  • 12. and their colleagues who performed temple tasks totaled 822 men. Adaiah, son of Jeroham, grandson of Pelaiah, great-grandson of Anzi – Anzi was the son of Zechariah, grandson of Pashur, great-grandson of Malchiah –
  • 13. and their colleagues, heads of families, totaled 242 men. Amasai, son of Azareel, grandson of Azai, great-grandson of Meshilemoth, great-great-grandson of Immer,
  • 14. Jedaiah, son of Joiarib; Jaquim; and his colleagues, valiant men, numbered 128. Their chief officer was Zabdiel, son of Gedolim.
  • 15. Among the Levites:
  • 16. Sabetai and Jozabad, two leaders of the Levites, were responsible for the external work of the temple of God;
  • 17. Mattaniah, son of Micah, grandson of Zabdi, great-grandson of Asaph, the leader who led thanksgiving and prayers; Baquebuquias, second among his brothers; and Abda, son of Shammua, grandson of Galal, great-grandson of Jeduthun.
  • 18. Shemaiah, son of Hasshub, grandson of Azricam, great-grandson of Hashabiah, great-great-grandson of Buni; There were 284 Levites in total in the holy city.
  • 19. The gatekeepers: Akkub, Talmon and their brothers, who guarded the gates, numbered 172.
  • 20The rest of the Israelites, including the priests and the Levites, were in all the cities of Judah, each in his inheritance.
  • 21. Those who served in the temple lived on the hill of Ophel, and Zia and Gispah were in charge of them.
  • 22. The chief officer of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi, son of Bani, grandson of Hashabiah, great-grandson of Mattaniah, great-great-grandson of Micah. Uzi was one of Asaph's descendants, in charge of music in the temple of God.
  • 23. They were under royal authority, which regulated their daily activities.
  • 24. Petaiah, son of Meshezebel, a descendant of Zerah, son of Judah, represented the king in civil matters.
  • 25. Some of the people of Judah lived in Kiriath-Arba and its surrounding areas, in Dibon and its surrounding areas, in Jekabzeel and its surrounding areas,
  • 26. in Jeshua, in Moladah, in Beth-pelet,
  • 27. in Hazar-Sual, in Beersheba and its surroundings,
  • 28. in Ziklag, in Mecona and its surroundings,
  • 29. in En-rimmon, in Zorah, in Jarmuth,
  • 30. in Zanoa, in Adullam and its surroundings, in Lachish and its surroundings, and in Azekah and its surroundings. They settled from Beersheba to the Valley of Hinnom.
  • 31. The descendants of Benjamin lived in Geba, Michmash, Aiá, Bethel and their surroundings,
  • 32. in Anathoth, in Nob and in Ananias,
  • 33. in Hazor, in Ramah and in Gitaim,
  • 34. in Hadid, in Zeboiim and in Nebalath,
  • 35. in Lod and in Ono, and in the valley of the artisans.
  • 36. Some groups of Levites from Judah settled in Benjamin.
