The angel of the Lord in Boquim

  • 1. The Messenger of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said: “I brought you out of Egypt and brought you to the land I promised to give to your ancestors. I made an everlasting covenant with you and promised never to break it.
  • 2. However, you made a treaty with the people of this land and built altars to their gods. Why didn't you obey me?
  • 3. Therefore now I say, I will not drive these nations out of the land. They will be a constant threat to you, and your gods will be a snare to bind you.”
  • 4. When the Messenger of the Lord finished speaking to the Israelites, the people wept loudly.
  • 5. They called that place Bokim and offered sacrifices to the Lord.

Joshua dies

  • 6. After Joshua's death, the Israelites left to occupy the land, each receiving their inheritance.
  • 7. Throughout the lives of Joshua and the leaders who lived after him and who witnessed the Lord's great works in favor of Israel, the people continued to worship the Lord.
  • 8. Joshua son of Nun, servant of the Lord, died at the age of one hundred and ten.
  • 9. He was buried in Timnath Heres, in the land given to him as an inheritance, in the mountains of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

Disobedience and defeat

  • 10. After the death of Joshua and the entire generation of those who witnessed the wonders of the Lord, a new generation arose, which did not know the Lord nor the works he had done for Israel.
  • 11. Then the Israelites did evil in the sight of the Lord and worshiped idols.
  • 12. They abandoned the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had delivered them from Egypt, and followed other gods of the people around them, provoking the Lord to anger.
  • 13. They abandoned the Lord and worshiped Baal and Ashtaroth.
  • 14. The anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of plunderers who oppressed them. He allowed them to be dominated by their enemies, and they were unable to resist.
  • 15. Every time the Israelites went into battle, the Lord was against them and defeated them, as he had warned and sworn. They suffered a lot and were oppressed.
  • 16. Then the Lord raised up judges to free them from the oppression of their enemies.
  • 17. However, they refused to listen to the judges and gave themselves over to the worship of other gods. They strayed from the path of their ancestors, who had obeyed the commandments of the Lord.
  • 18. Whenever a judge freed them, the Lord was with him and saved them from their enemies during that judge's lifetime, for the Lord had compassion on them in their suffering and affliction.
  • 19. But when the judge died, they again corrupted themselves even more than their ancestors, following other gods, worshiping them and refusing to give up their wicked ways and practices.
  • 20. Then the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he declared: “Because this people has broken the covenant I made with their ancestors and has not listened to my voice,
  • 21. I will no longer drive out any of the nations that Joshua left when he died.
  • 22. I will allow these nations to remain to test Israel and see if they will follow the way of the Lord, as their ancestors did.”
  • 23. The Lord allowed these nations to remain in the land and did not hand them over to Joshua.
