Israel fights the remaining Canaanites

  • 1. After Joshua's death, the Israelites turned to the Lord and asked, "Who will be the first to attack the Canaanites?"
  • 2. The Lord replied, “Judah shall be first; I have given the land into your hands.”
  • 3. Then the men of Judah said to their brothers from Simeon, “Come with us into the territory assigned to us by lot, and let us fight against the Canaanites. We will go to the territory together”. And Simeon's men went with them.
  • 4. When the men of Judah attacked, the Lord gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hands, and they killed ten thousand men in Bezek.
  • 5. It was there that they found Adoni-Bezek, fought against him and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
  • 6. Adoni-bezek fled, but they pursued him and arrested him, and cut off the thumbs of his hands and his feet.
  • 7. Then Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to pick up crumbs under my table. Now God has repaid me for what I did.” They took him to Jerusalem, where he died.
  • 8. The men of Judah also attacked Jerusalem and captured it. They killed all its inhabitants with the sword and set it on fire.
  • 9. After that, they went down to fight the Canaanites who lived in the mountains, in the Negeb and in the Shephelah.
  • 10. They advanced against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron, formerly called Quiriate-Arba, and defeated Shesai, Aiman and Talmai.
  • 11. From there they advanced against the people who lived in Debir, formerly called Quiriate-Sefer.
  • 12. And Caleb said, "I will give my daughter Achsa in marriage to the man who attacks and conquers Quiriath-Sefer."
  • 13. Othniel, son of Kenaz, younger brother of Caleb, conquered the city; so Caleb gave him his daughter Achsah to wife.
  • 14. One day, when she was living with Othniel, she persuaded him to ask her father for a field. As soon as she got off the donkey, Caleb asked her, “What do you want?”
  • 15. She replied: “Give me a present. You gave me a dry land; give me also fountains of water.” So Caleb gave him the upper and lower springs.
  • 16. The descendants of Moses' father-in-law, the Kenite, left the City of Palms with the men of Judah and lived among the people of the desert of Judah, in the Negeb, near Arad.
  • 17. Then the men of Judah went with their brothers from Simeon and defeated the Canaanites who lived in Zefath, and completely destroyed the city. Therefore she was called Hormah.
  • 18. The men of Judah also conquered Gaza, Ashkelon and Ekron, with their territories.
  • 19. The Lord was with the men of Judah. They occupied the central mountain range, but were unable to expel the inhabitants of the valleys, as they had war chariots made of iron.
  • 20. As Moses had promised, Hebron was given to Caleb, who drove out the three sons of Anak.
  • 21. However, the Benjamites were unable to drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem. The Jebusites live there with the Benjamites to this day.
  • 22. The men of the tribes of Joseph also attacked Bethel, and the Lord was with them.
  • 23. They sent spies to Bethel, formerly called Luz.
  • 24. When the spies saw a man leaving the city, they said to him, "Show us how to enter the city, and we will spare your life."
  • 25. He showed them how to enter, and they killed all the inhabitants of the city with the sword, but spared the man and all his family.
  • 26. He then went to the land of the Hittites, where he founded a city and named it Luz, which is its name to this day.
  • 27. But the tribe of Manasseh did not drive out the people of Beth-shean, Taanaque, Dor, Ibleam, Megiddo, nor the villages around these cities, for the Canaanites were determined to remain in that city. Earth.
  • 28. When Israel became strong, it imposed forced labor on the Canaanites, but did not drive them out completely.
  • 29. Ephraim also did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, but the Canaanites continued to live among them.
  • 30. Zebulun did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Quitrom and Naalol, but these remained among them and were subjected to forced labor.
  • 31. Aser did not drive out those who lived in Acco, Sidon, Alab, Aczib, Helba, Aphek and Rehob,
  • 32. and for this reason the Asherites lived among the Canaanites who inhabited that land.
  • 33. Naphtali did not drive out those who lived in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath; but the Naphtalites lived among the Canaanites who inhabited the land, and those who lived in Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath began to do forced labor for them.
  • 34. The Amorites confined the tribe of Dan to the central mountain range, not allowing them to go down to the valley.
  • 35. And the Amorites were also determined to resist on Mount Heres, on Aijalon and on Saalbim. But as Joseph's tribes grew more powerful, they too were subjected to forced labor.
  • 36. The border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Acrabim to Selah, and beyond.
