The Lord commissions Joshua

  • 1. After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' attendant, saying:
  • 2. “My servant Moses died. Now, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River and enter the land I am about to give to the Israelites.
  • 3. Just as I promised Moses, every place your feet step on will be given to you.
  • 4. Their territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates, to the land of the Hittites, to the Great Sea in the west.
  • 5. No one will be able to resist you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so will I be with you; I will never leave you, I will never leave you.
  • 6. Be strong and courageous, for you will lead this people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors.
  • 7. Just be strong and very brave! Be careful to obey all the law that my servant Moses commanded you; do not deviate from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success in everything you do.
  • 8. Be sure to speak the words of this Book of the Law and meditate on them day and night, so that you may fulfill all that is written therein. Then you will be successful in everything you do.
  • 9. Didn't I order you this? Be strong and brave! Do not be afraid or dismayed, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
  • 10. Then Joshua gave instructions to the officers of the people, saying:
  • 11. “Go through the camp and tell the people to get ready. In three days you will cross the Jordan at this point and enter the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.”
  • 12. To the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh, Joshua said:
  • 13. “Remember the command Moses the servant of the Lord gave you when the Lord your God promised you a resting place and gave you this land.
  • 14 Your women, children, and livestock may remain in the land Moses gave you east of the Jordan, but every armed man among you, ready for battle, will cross before your Israelite brothers. you will help them
  • 15. until the Lord allows them also to enjoy rest, just as he allowed you. Until then, they will take possession of the land the Lord their God is giving them. After that, you may return and occupy the land that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you east of the Jordan, toward sunrise.”
  • 16. Then they answered Joshua, saying, “All that you command us, we will do; wherever you send us, we will go.
  • 17. As we fully obeyed Moses, so will we obey you. Only the Lord your God be with you, as he was with Moses.
  • 18. Anyone who rebels against your orders and does not obey your instructions, whatever you command us, will be put to death. Just be strong and brave!”
