The defeat of the kings of the north

  • 1. When Jabin king of Hazor heard of this, he sent messages to Jobab king of Madon, and to the kings of Shimron and Achshaph,
  • 2. and the kings of the north, who lived in the hill country, in the Arabah south of Chinnereth, in the western foothills and in Naphoth Dor,
  • 3. the Canaanites from the east and west, the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites and Jebusites from the hill country, and the Hivites from the foothills of Mount Hermon in the region of Mizpah.
  • 4. All these kings gathered their troops together, forming an army as numerous as the sand on the seashore, with a great number of horses and chariots.
  • 5. They camped together at the Waters of Merom, ready to fight against Israel.
  • 6 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, for tomorrow at this time I will hand over all of them to Israel, slain. You must hamstring their horses and burn their chariots.”
  • 7. Joshua and his army surprised the enemy at the Waters of Merom and attacked them.
  • 8. The Lord gave them all into the hands of Israel, who defeated them and pursued them as far as Great Sidon and Misrephoth Maim and the Valley of Mizpah to the east. They killed them all, leaving no survivors.
  • 9. Joshua dealt with them according to the Lord's command. He hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots.
  • 10. At that time Joshua returned and captured Hazor and killed its king with the sword. (Hazor had been the capital of all these kingdoms.)
  • 11. Joshua killed everyone in Hazor, completely destroying them, leaving no survivors, and he burned the city.
  • 12. Joshua captured all those cities and killed the kings who ruled over them. He completely destroyed them, doing what the Lord's servant Moses had commanded.
  • 13. However, Israel did not burn any of the cities built on the hills, except Hazor, which Joshua burned.
  • 14. The Israelites took all the plunder and livestock from the cities, but they put all their inhabitants to the sword, completely destroying them, leaving no survivors.
  • 15. So Joshua did everything the Lord had commanded Moses, and Moses had given Joshua his orders, and he did everything he could to keep them.
  • 16. Joshua conquered the entire land: the central highlands, all the Negev, all of Goshen, the western foothills, the Arabah, and the hill country of Israel with its plains.
  • 17. From Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir, to Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon, at the foot of Mount Hermon. Joshua defeated and killed all the kings of these regions.
  • 18. Joshua fought against all these kings for a long time.
  • 19. Except for the Hivites who lived in Gibeon, no city made peace with the Israelites. They captured all of them in battle.
  • 20. For the Lord himself hardened the hearts of these nations to make war against Israel, so that they might be utterly destroyed without mercy, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
  • 21. At that time Joshua destroyed the Anakim from the hill country of Hebron, Debir, Anab and all the hill country of Judah and Israel. Joshua completely destroyed them and their cities.
  • 22. No Anakim was left alive in the land of Israel, except in Gaza, Gath and Ashdod. Some of them survived in these cities.
  • 23. So Joshua took possession of the whole land, as the Lord had promised Moses, and he divided it as an inheritance for Israel according to their tribes. Then the land had rest from war.
