Job - Old Testament
Job – Old Testament
  • 1. “Is not man's life a battle on earth? Aren't your days like those of a worker?
  • 2. Like the slave who sighs for the afternoon shadows, like the salaryman who longs for the end of the day,
  • 3. so months of futility were granted to me and nights of affliction were reserved for me.
  • 4. When I lie down, I think: When can I get up? The night drags on, and I toss and turn in bed until dawn.
  • 5. My body is covered with worms and scabs, my skin is dry and full of ulcers.
  • 6. “My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and they come to an end without hope.
  • 7. Remember, O God, that my life is a breath; my eyes will never see happiness again.
  • 8. Those who see me now will never see me again; Your eyes are upon me, but I am no more.
  • 9. As the cloud dissipates and disappears, so he who goes down to the grave will not return.
  • 10. You will never return to your home; your place will no longer know you.
  • 11. “That is why I do not keep quiet, I vent my anguish, I pour out the bitterness of my soul.
  • 12. Am I the sea or a sea monster that you watch me so carefully?
  • 13. When I think that my bed will comfort me and my bed will ease my complaint,
  • 14. you terrify me with dreams and frighten me with visions.
  • 15. I would rather be strangled and die than face this misery.
  • 16. I reject my life! I will not live forever; leave me, for my days have no meaning.
  • 17. “What is man that you give importance to him, that you consider him every moment,
  • 18. so that you examine it every morning and test it every moment?
  • 19. When will you look away from me? When will you leave me alone, at least for a moment?
  • 20. If I have sinned, what harm have I caused you, O you who watch over men? Why did you target me? Am I a burden to you?
  • 21. Why do you not forgive my transgressions and blot out my iniquities? For soon I will lie down in the dust; you will look for me, but I will be no more.”
