  • 1. “But now they mock me, men younger than me, men whose parents I would have despised to the point of not allowing them to even keep the dogs of my flock.
  • 2. Of what use would the strength of your hands be to me, since their vigor has disappeared?
  • 3. They are exhausted from so much suffering and hunger; They wander through arid and deserted lands, devastated and gloomy.
  • 4. They pull up herbs in the bush and eat broom roots as their only food.
  • 5. They are expelled from the camps shouting, as if they were thieves.
  • 6. They have to live in the cracks of dry valleys, in caves and holes in the earth.
  • 7. They roar among the bushes, they cower under the vegetation.
  • 8. They are children of fools, nameless and worthless, expelled from the earth.
  • 9. “But now they mock me with their songs; I became the object of their contempt.
  • 10. They avoid me and don't hesitate to spit in my face.
  • 11. God has relaxed my bow and afflicted me, and now they have no restraint in mistreating me.
  • 12. They attack me from the right like a horde, they lay traps for my feet, building trenches against me.
  • 13. They destroy my path, contributing to my destruction, without anyone stopping them.
  • 14. They advance as though through a great breach, rushing into the ruins.
  • 15. Terror turns against me; my honor is torn away like the wind, and my hope disappears like a cloud.
  • 16. “My life is fading away, days of distress overtake me.
  • 17. The night penetrates my bones; my pain does not cease.
  • 18. God surrounds me with his greatness, he dresses me like a tunic.
  • 19. He cast me into the mud, and I am reduced to dust and ashes.
  • 20. “I called to you, O God, but I received no answer; I stand before you, but you just watch.
  • 21. You have become cruel to me, you attack me with the power of your hand.
  • 22. You catch me in the wind, cast me into the whirlwind and toss me from side to side in the storm.
  • 23. I know that you will lead me to death, to the place destined for all living.
  • 24. “No one extends a hand to someone in need when they cry out for help in the midst of their misfortune.
  • 25. Did I not weep for the afflicted? Has my soul not been saddened by the plight of those in need?
  • 26. Even so, when I expected good, evil came; When he was waiting for the light, darkness came.
  • 27. I can't find peace or tranquility; the days of distress come upon me.
  • 28. I am blackened, not by the sun; I stand up in the assembly and scream for help.
  • 29. I became brother to jackals, companion to owls.
  • 30. My skin has become dark and flakes, my body burns with fever.
  • 31. My harp is tuned to lamentation, my flute to the sound of weeping.
