  • 1. “There are mines where silver is extracted, and places where gold is refined.
  • 2. Iron is taken from the dust of the earth, and stone is smelted to produce copper.
  • 3. Man makes the darkness cease and investigates the deepest depths in search of ores, exploring the densest darkness.
  • 4. He digs a well far from the dwellings, in places forgotten by men; he swings and hangs in inaccessible places.
  • 5. The earth, from which food comes, is turned over as if by fire.
  • 6. Sapphires are extracted from it, and the powder contains gold nuggets.
  • 7. No bird of prey knows that hidden path, and the eyes of the hawk do not see it.
  • 8. The haughty beasts do not trample it, and the lion has never trampled it.
  • 9. Man takes hold of the stones and overturns the foundations of the mountains.
  • 10. He makes tunnels in the rocks, and his eyes behold all the hidden treasures.
  • 11. He investigates the sources of rivers and brings to light what was hidden.
  • 12. “Where, then, is wisdom found? Where does understanding dwell?
  • 13. Mortals do not understand its value, nor can it be found in the land of the living.
  • 14. The deep says, 'She is not in me,' and the sea says, 'She is not with me.'
  • 15. It cannot be purchased with pure gold, nor can its price be weighed in silver.
  • 16. It cannot be purchased with the gold of Ophir, nor with the precious onyx or sapphires.
  • 17. Gold and crystal are not comparable to her, and their value exceeds that of pearls.
  • 18. Coral and jasper are not equal, and their price is greater than rubies.
  • 19. The topaz of Ethiopia cannot be compared with it, nor can it be purchased with the purest gold.
  • 20. “So where does wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell?
  • 21. It is hidden from everyone's eyes, even from the birds of the sky.
  • 22. Destruction and Death say, 'We only hear about it.'
  • 23. God understands your path; only he knows where she lives.
  • 24. For he contemplates the ends of the earth and observes everything that happens under the heavens.
  • 25. When he determined the strength of the wind and determined the measurements of the waters,
  • 26. when he fixed a decree for rain and a path for lightning,
  • 27. then he beheld wisdom and revealed it; confirmed it and examined it.
  • 28. And he said to the man, 'The fear of the Lord is wisdom, and the avoidance of evil is understanding.'”
