A boy was born to us

  • 1. However, there will be no more darkness for those who were afflicted. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the Gentiles, the way of the sea, by the Jordan.
  • 2. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.
  • 3. You made the nation grow and increased its joy; they rejoice before you like those who rejoice at the harvest, like those who rejoice when dividing the goods taken in battle.
  • 4. For you destroyed the yoke that oppressed them, the yoke that was on their shoulders and the rod of punishment of their oppressor, as in the day of Midian's defeat.
  • 5. For every boot worn in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be burned up like wood in a fire.
  • 6. For a boy was born to us, a son was given to us, and the government is on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
  • 7. He will extend his dominion, and there will be endless peace on the throne of David and on his kingdom, established and maintained with justice and righteousness from now and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
  • 8. The Lord sent a message against Jacob, and it reached Israel.
  • 9. All the people will know, both Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria, who say with pride and arrogance of heart:
  • 10. “The bricks have fallen, but we will rebuild with hewn stones; the wild fig trees have been cut down, but we will replace them with cedars”.
  • 11. But the LORD strengthened the adversaries of Rezin to attack them, and stirred up their enemies against them.
  • 12. The Arameans from the east and the Philistines from the west devoured Israel, their mouths wide open. Despite all this, the divine wrath did not turn away; his hand is still raised.
  • 13. But the people did not return to him who smote them, nor did they seek the Lord of hosts.
  • 14. Therefore the LORD cuts off from Israel both head and tail, palm and reed, in one day;
  • 15. The leaders and prominent men are the head, the prophets who teach lies are the tail.
  • 16. Those who guide this people mislead them, and those who are guided allow themselves to be led astray.
  • 17. Therefore the Lord will not rejoice in the young, nor will he have mercy on orphans and widows, for all are hypocrites and perverse, and all speak foolish things. Despite all this, his anger did not turn away; his hand is still raised.
  • 18. For ungodliness burns like fire; it consumes wild roses and thorns, it sets fire to the thickets of the forest, making clouds of smoke.
  • 19. By the anger of the LORD of hosts the land will be parched, and the people will be like wood in the fire; no one will spare his brother.
  • 20. On the right they will devour, but they will still be hungry; on the left they will eat, but not be satisfied. Each one will eat the flesh of his own brother.
  • 21. Manasseh against Ephraim, Ephraim against Manasseh, and together they will turn against Judah. Notwithstanding all this, the divine wrath did not turn away; his hand is still raised.
