The Call of Isaiah

  • 1. In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw a vision of the Lord sitting on a throne, high and exalted, and the hem of his garment filled the temple.
  • 2. Above him were seraphim; each of them had six wings: with two they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew.
  • 3. And they proclaimed to one another, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory.”
  • 4. At the sound of their voices, the beams of the umbrals shook, and the temple was filled with smoke.
  • 5. Then I cried, Woe is me! I'm lost! I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell among a people of unclean lips; and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!
  • 6. Soon one of the seraphim flew to me carrying a live coal, which he had taken from the altar with tongs.
  • 7. With it he touched my mouth and said, "Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt will be taken away, and your sin will be forgiven."
  • 8. Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” And I answered: Here I am. Send me!
  • 9. He said, “Go and tell this people, 'I have heard with my ears, but you do not understand; look with your eyes, but you do not perceive'.
  • 10. Make the heart of this people callous, make their ears heavy, and close their eyes; lest he see with his eyes, nor hear with his ears, nor understand with his heart, and turn and be healed.”
  • 11. So I asked, “How long, Lord?” And he replied: “Until the cities are devastated, without inhabitant; until the houses are abandoned and the fields are totally ruined,
  • 12. until the Lord has sent them all far away, and the land is desolate and empty.
  • 13. Even if a tenth of the people remain in the midst of the land, they will be destroyed again. But as the terebinth and the oak have a trunk when they are cut down, so the holy seed will be the trunk of that nation.”
