Judgment on Judah and Jerusalem

  • 1. Listen well! The Sovereign Lord of hosts will take from Jerusalem and from Judah all sustenance: bread and water;
  • 2. The hero and the warrior, the judge and the prophet, the soothsayer and the elder will also be taken away,
  • 3. the captain and the nobleman, the adviser, the skilled craftsman and the eloquent orator.
  • 4 So this day I will hand over youth as their leaders, and irresponsibility will reign.
  • 5. The people will be oppressed, one by the other, and all against the next; the young will rebel against the old, and the vile against the honorable.
  • 6 A man will take his brother by the tunic and say, “You have authority! Be our leader and rule us, for this desolation is in your hands.”
  • 7 But he will answer in that day, “I cannot be a doctor, there is neither bread nor cloak in my house; don’t make me leader of the people!”
  • 8 Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is crumbling, for their words and actions are against the Lord, defying His glorious presence.
  • 9 Their countenances testify against them; like Sodom, they proclaim their sin without concealing it. Woe to them, for they bring disgrace upon themselves!
  • 10 Tell the righteous that it will be well with them, for they will eat the fruit of their ways.
  • 11 But woe to the wicked! Your reward will be the evil your hands have wrought.
  • 12 As for my people, children will oppress them, and women will rule over them. My people, those who guide you lead you astray and destroy the path you should follow.
  • 13 The Lord stands to judge, he stands to judge the peoples.
  • 14 The Lord will come to judgment against the elders and princes of his people: “You have consumed the vineyard, the spoil of the poor is in your houses!
  • 15 What does it mean to crush my people and grind the faces of the poor?” – declares the Lord, the Sovereign of hosts.
  • 16 The Lord says, “Because of the pride of the women of Zion, they will walk with their heads held high and cast seductive eyes,
  • 17 Then God will shave the heads of the women of Zion, and the Lord will make their shame bare.”
  • 18 On that day the Lord will take away your ornaments: your foot ornaments, your nets, your pendants,
  • 19 the earrings, the bracelets and the veils,
  • 20 turbans, amulets, and belts,
  • 21 the vials of perfume and the charms of enchantment,
  • 22 the rings and the nosepieces,
  • 23 the splendid clothes and the fine cloaks, the shawls and the bags.
  • 24 Instead of perfume there will be a stench; instead of belts, ropes; instead of well-groomed hair, shaved heads; instead of fine garments, mourning garments; instead of beauty, inflamed wounds.
  • 25 Your men will fall by the sword, and your mighty men will perish in battle.
  • 26 Then the gates of Zion will wail and wail, and the city will be desolate, sitting on the ground without its people.
