God's Covenant with Noah

  • 1. God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them: Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.
  • 2. Your fear and terror will be upon all the beasts of the earth and upon all the birds of the air; everything that moves on the earth and all the fish in the sea are delivered into your hands.
  • 3. Everything that moves and lives will serve you as food; as I gave you the green herb, so now I give you everything.
  • 4. But the flesh with its life, that is, with its blood, you shall not eat.
  • 5. I will certainly require your blood, the blood of your lives; I will require it at the hand of every animal; and at the hand of man, and at the hand of every man's brother, will I require the life of man.
  • 6. Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; because God made man in his image.
  • 7. But you, be fruitful and multiply; populate the earth abundantly and multiply in it.
  • 8. God spoke to Noah and his sons with him, saying:
  • 9. I establish my covenant with you and with your descendants,
  • 10. and with all the living creatures that are with you: both birds and domestic animals, and all the animals of the earth with you; everyone who came out of the ark, even every animal on the earth.
  • 11. I will establish my covenant with you, and all living things will no longer be destroyed by the waters of the flood; nor will there be any more flood to destroy the earth.
  • 12. And God said: This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and between every living creature that is with you, for all generations to come:
  • 13. I have set my bow in the clouds, and it will be a sign that there is a covenant between me and the earth.
  • 14. And it shall come to pass, when I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow appears in them,
  • 15. then I will remember my covenant, made between me and you and every living creature of every kind; and the waters will no longer become a flood to destroy all flesh.
  • 16. The bow will be in the clouds, and when I see it, I will remember the eternal covenant between God and every living creature of every kind that is on the earth.
  • 17. God said to Noah: This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.

Noah's sons

  • 18. The sons of Noah, who came out of the ark, were Shem, Ham and Japheth. Ham is the father of Canaan.
  • 19. These are the three sons of Noah, with whom the whole earth was populated.
  • 20. Noah began to be a farmer and planted a vineyard.
  • 21. He drank the wine, got drunk and fell asleep naked inside his tent.
  • 22. Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father's nakedness and told his two brothers, who were outside.
  • 23. Then Shem and Japheth took a cloak, and put it on their own shoulders, and, going backwards, they covered their father's nakedness; their faces were turned away, so that they did not see their father's nakedness.
  • 24. When Noah woke up from his wine, he learned what his youngest son had done to him.
  • 25. And he said, Cursed be Canaan; be a servant of your brothers' servants.
  • 26. And he said, Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem; and let Canaan be their servant.
  • 27. May God enlarge Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem; and let Canaan be their servant.
  • 28. After the flood, Noah lived three hundred and fifty years.
  • 29. The whole time of Noah's life was nine hundred and fifty years; and died.
