The flood
- 1. When men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born to them,
- 2. the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took for themselves wives of all whom they chose.
- 3. Then said the Lord, My Spirit shall not strive with man forever; because he is also flesh; but his days will be one hundred and twenty years.
- 4. Now in those days the Nephilim were in the earth, when the sons of God came together with the daughters of men and begot children by them; These were the mighty men of old, the men of renown.
- 5. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of his heart was evil continually;
- 6. Then the Lord regretted having made man on the earth, and it weighed on his heart.
- 7. The Lord said: I will make man whom I have created disappear from the face of the earth, both man and beast, the creeping thing and the birds of the air; because I regret having done them.
- 8. But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
- 9. This is the story of Noah. Noah was a just and upright man among his contemporaries; Noah walked with God.
- 10. He fathered three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth.
- 11. But the earth was corrupt before God, and full of violence.
- 12. God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; because every living thing had corrupted its way on earth.
- 13. Then God said to Noah: I have decided to put an end to all flesh, because the earth is full of the violence of men; behold, I will make them perish with the earth.
- 14. Make yourself an ark of gopher wood; You will make compartments in the ark and cover it inside and outside with bitumen.
- 15. This is how you will make it: the length of the ark will be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits.
- 16. You shall make a window next to the ark and make it a cubit high; you shall put the door of the ark at its side; you will also make a lower story, a second and a third.
- 17. Behold, I bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which there is the breath of life under the heavens; everything on earth will perish.
- 18. But I will establish my covenant with you; you will enter the ark, you and your sons, your wife and your sons' wives.
- 19. Of everything that lives, of all flesh, two of each kind, male and female, you will bring into the ark, to keep them alive with you;
- 20. of birds according to their kind, of cattle according to their kind, of every creeping thing on the earth according to its kind, two of each kind will come to you to keep them alive.
- 21. And you, take for yourself all the food that is eaten and gather it for yourself, so that it may be food for you and for them.
- 22. So Noah did; according to everything that God commanded him, he did so.
