Genesis Verses, Chapter 46 of the Book of Genesis of the Bible.
Jacob goes to Egypt
- 1. Israel left with everything they had. When he arrived in Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father, Isaac.
- 2. During the night God spoke to Israel in a vision and said, “Jacob! Jacob!” “Here I am,” he replied.
- 3. “I am God, the God of your father,” he said. “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you a great nation.
- 4 I will go with you to Egypt, and I will surely bring you back again. And Joseph will close his eyes.”
- 5. So Jacob left Beersheba. The children of Israel took their father Jacob, their children and their wives in the chariots that Pharaoh had sent to transport them.
- 6. They also took their flocks and their goods that they had acquired in the land of Canaan. Jacob and his entire family went to Egypt.
- 7. He took his sons and grandsons, his daughters and granddaughters, and all their descendants with him into Egypt.
- 8. These are the names of the sons of Israel, Jacob and his descendants, who went to Egypt: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn.
- 9. The sons of Reuben: Enoch, Palu, Hezrom and Carmi.
- 10. The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Oad, Jachin, Zoar and Saul, son of a Canaanite woman.
- 11. The sons of Levi: Gershon, Coate and Merari.
- 12. The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez and Zerah (but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan). The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.
- 13. The sons of Issachar: Tolah, Puah, Job and Sinron.
- 14. The sons of Zebulun: Sered, Elon, and Jaleel.
- 15. These are the children Leah had with Jacob in Padan-aram, in addition to his daughter Dinah. Total of his sons and daughters: thirty-three.
- 16. The sons of Gad: Zifiom, Hagui, Suni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi and Areli.
- 17. The children of Aser: Imna, Isvah, Isvi, Beriah and Sera, their sister. The sons of Beriah: Heber and Malchiel.
- 18. These are the sons of Zilpa, to whom Laban gave his daughter Leah. She bore these children to Jacob, sixteen in all.
- 19. The sons of Rachel, Jacob's wife: Joseph and Benjamin.
- 20. There were born to Joseph in Egypt, before Jacob arrived, Manasseh and Ephraim, sons whom Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, bore him.
- 21. The sons of Benjamin: Bela, Becher, Asbel, Gera, Naaman, Eí, Ros, Muppim, Huppim and Ard.
- 22. These are the children of Raquel, who were born to Jacob, fourteen in all.
- 23. The son of Dan: Husim.
- 24. The sons of Naphtali: Jaziel, Guni, Jezer and Silem.
- 25. These are the sons of Bila, which Laban bore to his daughter Rachel, and she bore these sons to Jacob, seven in all.
- 26. The total number of people who went with Jacob to Egypt, excluding the wives of Jacob's sons, was sixty-six.
- 27. The total number of people from Jacob's family who went to Egypt was seventy.
- 28. Jacob sent Judah ahead to tell Joseph of his arrival in Goshen. When they arrived in Goshen,
- 29. Joseph had his chariot prepared and went to Goshen to meet his father Israel. As soon as she saw him, she threw herself on his neck and wept for a long time.
- 30. Israel said to Joseph, "Now I can die, for I have seen your face and I know that you are alive."
- 31. Joseph said to his brothers and his father's family, “I will go up and report to Pharaoh, and I will say, 'My brothers and my father's family, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me.
- 32. These men are shepherds of sheep; they have always been dedicated to raising livestock, both they and their ancestors'.
- 33. And when Pharaoh calls them and asks, 'What is your business?'
- 34. say, 'Your servants have been sheep shepherds from our youth until now, both we and our ancestors'. Then you will be able to live in the region of Goshen, for all sheepherders are considered detestable by the Egyptians.”
