Cain and Abel
- 1. Now the man knew Eve his wife; she conceived and, having given birth to Cain, said: I have acquired a man with the help of the Lord.
- 2. Then she gave birth to Abel, her brother. Abel became a shepherd, and Cain a husbandman.
- 3. At the end of some time, Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord;
- 4. Abel also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat. The Lord regarded Abel and his offering,
- 5. but to Cain and to his offering he did not respect. Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
- 6. Then the Lord asked Cain: Why were you angry? And why is your countenance fallen?
- 7. If you do well, is it not certain that you will be accepted? But if you do wrong, behold, sin is crouching at the door; his desire shall be against you, but you must master him.
- 8. Cain said to Abel, his brother: Let's go to the field. And as they were in the field, it came to pass that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
- 9. The Lord asked Cain, Where is Abel your brother? He replied: I don't know; am I my brother's keeper?
- 10. Then God said to him, What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries out to me from the earth.
- 11. And now cursed are you from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.
- 12. When you plow the land, it will no longer give you its strength; You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on earth.
- 13. Cain said to the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.
- 14. Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; I will also be hidden from your presence; I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the land; whoever finds me will kill me.
- 15. But the Lord said to him, Therefore whoever kills Cain will be avenged seven times. And the Lord put a mark on Cain, so that whoever found him would not hurt him.
- 16. So Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
- 17. Cain knew his wife, who conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Cain built a city and called it Enoch, after his son's name.
- 18. Enoch was born Irade, Irade begat Meujael, Meujael begat Metusael, Metusael begat Lameque.
- 19. Lameque took for himself two women; the name of one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
- 20. Adah gave birth to Jabal, who was the father of those who live in tents and have livestock.
- 21. His brother's name was Jubal; this was the father of all who play the harp and flute.
- 22. And Zillah also gave birth to Tubalcain, the craftsman of every sharp instrument, of bronze and iron. Tubalcain's sister was Naamah.
- 23. Lameque said to his women: Ada and Zilla, hear me; you women of Lameque, listen to what I say to you: I killed a man because he hurt me, and a young man because he stepped on me.
- 24. If Cain is to be avenged seven times, Lamech will be avenged seventy-seven times.
- 25. He made Adam know his wife; and she gave birth to a son, whom she named Seth; because, she said, God has given me another descendant in place of Abel; because Cain killed him.
- 26. A son was also born to Seth; and named him Enos. It was at that time that men began to call on the name of the Lord.
