Jacob meets Esau

  • 1. Jacob looked and saw Esau approaching with four hundred men. So he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two maidservants.
  • 2. He put the female servants and their children in front, Leah and her children second, and Rachel and Joseph last.
  • 3. He himself passed by in front of them and bowed down to the ground seven times until he came to his brother.
  • 4. Esau ran to meet him, threw his arms around him, and kissed him. And they wept.
  • 5. Esau looked around and saw the women and children and asked, “Who are these with you?” Jacob replied, “They are the children God has graciously given to your servant.”
  • 6. The servant girls and their children came forward and bowed down.
  • 7. Then Leah and her children came and bowed down. After this, Joseph and Rachel came and bowed down.
  • 8. Esau asked, “What is the meaning of all these flocks and herds I have found?” Jacob replied, “I have found favor in the eyes of my master.”
  • 9. But Esau said, “I have enough, my brother; keep what is yours for yourself.”
  • 10. But Jacob said, “No, please! If I have found favor in your eyes, accept my gift. For seeing your face is like seeing the face of God, now that you have welcomed me so kindly.
  • 11. Please accept the present that has been brought to you, because God has been kind to me and I have enough.” Jacob insisted with Esau until Esau accepted it.
  • 12. Then Esau said, “Let us go our separate ways; I will go ahead of you.”
  • 13 But Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are weak, and that I have to tend the sheep and the cows that are nursing. If I overwork them for one day, the whole flock will die.
  • 14. Please, my lord, go ahead of your servant. I will follow slowly, keeping pace with the cattle and the children, until I reach my lord in Seir.”
  • 15. Esau replied, “Leave some of my men with me.” “What for?” Jacob asked. Esau insisted, “So be it! At least let me leave some of my men with you.” But Jacob replied, “How good it is that my master is pleased with me!”
  • 16. So Esau returned that same day by the way he had come to Seir.
  • 17. But Jacob went to Succoth, where he built a house for himself and shelters for his flock. Therefore he named that place Succoth.
  • 18. After leaving Paddan Aram, Jacob came to Salem, the city of Shechem in Canaan, and camped near the city.
  • 19. He bought the piece of land where he had pitched his tent from Hamor, Shechem's father, for a hundred pieces of money.
  • 20. There he built an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel.
