Jacob receives Isaac's blessing

  • 1. And it came to pass, as Isaac grew old, and his eyes were darkened, so that he could not see, that he called unto Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, My son. And he said unto him, Here am I.
  • 2. And he said unto him, Behold, I am old, I know not the day of my death.
  • 3. Now therefore, take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out into the field, and catch some game for me.
  • 4. And make me a savory stew, as I like it, and bring it to me, that I may eat, and bless you before I die.
  • 5. Now Rebekah listened when Isaac spoke to Esau his son; and Esau went out into the field to hunt for food.
  • 6. Then Rebekah spoke to Jacob her son, saying: Behold, I have heard your father speaking to Esau your brother, saying:
  • 7. Bring me game, and make me a savory stew, that I may eat, and bless you before the LORD, before I die.
  • 8. Now therefore, my son, hear my voice in what I command you.
  • 9. Go now to the flock, and bring me two good goats from there, and I will make a savory stew of them for your father, as he likes.
  • 10. And you shall take it to your father, and he shall eat, that he may bless you before his death.
  • 11. Then Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man.
  • 12. Perhaps my father will feel me, and I will be like a deceiver in his eyes; so I will bring upon myself a curse, and not a blessing.
  • 13. And his mother said unto him, My son, let this curse be upon me; only hear my voice, and go, bring them to me.
  • 14. Then he went and took them, and brought them to his mother; and his mother made a savory stew, just as his father liked it.
  • 15. And Rebekah took the best garments of Esau, her eldest son, which she had with her in the house, and put it on Jacob, her youngest son;
  • 16. And with the skins of the goats he covered his hands and the smoothness of his neck.
  • 17. And he gave the savory stew and the bread that he had prepared into the hand of Jacob his son.
  • 18. And he went to his father, and said: My father! And he said, Here am I; who are you, my son?
  • 19. And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau thy firstborn; I have done as you told me; arise now, sit down, and eat of my game, that my soul may bless me.
  • 20. And Isaac said unto his son, How is this, that thou hast found her so quickly, my son? And he said, Because the LORD your God sent her to meet me.
  • 21. And Isaac said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee, that I may feel thee, my son, to know whether thou art my son Esau, or not.
  • 22. And Jacob came near unto Isaac his father, and he felt him, and said, The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.
  • 23. And he did not know him, because his hands were hairy, like the hands of Esau his brother; and blessed him.
  • 24. And he said, Are you really Esau my son? And he said: I am.
  • 25. Then he said: Bring this near me, that I may eat of my son's game, that my soul may bless you. And he came to him, and ate; He also brought him wine, and he drank.
  • 26. Then Isaac his father said to him, Come now, and kiss me, my son.
  • 27. And he came and kissed him. Then Isaac smelled the smell of his clothes, and blessed him, and said, Behold, the smell of my son is like the smell of the field, which the LORD has blessed.
  • 28. So then may God give you the dew of the heavens, and the fat of the earth, and an abundance of wheat and new wine.
  • 29. Let people serve you, and nations bow down to you; be lord of your brothers, and your mother's children will bow down to you; Cursed be those who curse you, and blessed be those who bless you.
  • 30. And it came to pass, when Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, that Jacob went out from before Isaac his father, and Esau his brother came from his hunting.
  • 31. And he also made some savory stew, and brought it to his father; and he said unto his father, Arise, my father, and eat of thy son's game, that thy soul may bless me.
  • 32. And his father Isaac said unto him, Who art thou? And he said, I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.
  • 33. Then Isaac trembled greatly, and said, Who then is he that hath caught game, and brought it to me? And I ate everything before you came, and I blessed him, and he will be blessed.
  • 34. When Esau heard his father's words, he cried out with a loud and very bitter cry, and said to his father: Bless me also, my father.
  • 35. And he said, Thy brother came subtly, and took thy blessing.
  • 36. Then he said, Is this not why his name is Jacob? For he has twice supplanted me: my birthright has taken me, and behold, now my blessing has taken me. And he asked: Have you not reserved some blessing for me?
  • 37. Then Isaac answered and said unto Esau, Behold, I have made him lord over thee, and all his brethren I have given him as servants; and I have strengthened him with wheat and new wine; So what shall I do to you now, my son?
  • 38. And Esau said unto his father, Hast thou but one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father. And Esau lifted up his voice, and wept.
  • 39. Then Isaac his father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be in the fatness of the earth, and in the dew of the heavens above;
  • 40. And thou shalt live by thy sword, and serve thy brother; But it shall come to pass, that thou shalt rise up, and shake off his yoke from off thy neck.

Jacob flees to Laban

  • 41. So Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him; and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are come; then I will kill Jacob my brother.
  • 42. And these words of Esau her eldest son were reported to Rebekah; and she sent for Jacob, her youngest son, and said to him: Behold, Esau your brother takes comfort in your behalf, meaning to kill you.
  • 43. Now therefore, my son, hear my voice; arise, and flee to the house of Laban my brother in Haran;
  • 44. And stay with him a few days, until your brother's anger passes.
  • 45. Until your brother's anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you did to him; then I will send and bring you from there; Why should I be bereaved of both of you on the same day?
  • 46. And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth; If Jacob takes a wife from the daughters of Heth, like these, from the daughters of this land, what good will my life be to me?
